Chapter 53 of the Qur'an · “The Star” · 62 verses · revealed in Makkah
53:1 وَٱلنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَىٰBy the star when it falls,
53:2مَا ضَلَّ صَاحِبُكُمْ وَمَا غَوَىٰyour companion has not strayed, nor is he deluded.
53:3وَمَا يَنطِقُ عَنِ ٱلْهَوَىٰٓnor does he speak from his own desire.
53:4إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا وَحْىٌ يُوحَىٰIt is nothing but a revelation revealed,
53:5عَلَّمَهُۥ شَدِيدُ ٱلْقُوَىٰTaught to him by one of mighty powers,
53:6ذُو مِرَّةٍ فَٱسْتَوَىٰone of power, who stood firm,
53:7وَهُوَ بِٱلْأُفُقِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰwhile he was on the highest horizon.
53:8ثُمَّ دَنَا فَتَدَلَّىٰThen he drew near and came down,
53:9فَكَانَ قَابَ قَوْسَيْنِ أَوْ أَدْنَىٰuntil he was two bow-lengths away, or nearer still,
53:10فَأَوْحَىٰٓ إِلَىٰ عَبْدِهِۦ مَآ أَوْحَىٰand revealed to his servant what he revealed.
53:11مَا كَذَبَ ٱلْفُؤَادُ مَا رَأَىٰٓThe heart did not lie about what it saw.
53:12أَفَتُمَـٰرُونَهُۥ عَلَىٰ مَا يَرَىٰWill you then dispute with him about what he saw?
53:13وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةً أُخْرَىٰAnd he saw him once again, in another descent,
53:14عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰby the lote tree of the farthest boundary,
53:15عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓnear it is the garden of refuge.
53:16إِذْ يَغْشَى ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰwhen the lote tree was covered by what covered it.
53:17مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰHis sight did not waver, nor did it overreach.
53:18لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْكُبْرَىٰٓHe truly saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord.
53:19أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱللَّـٰتَ وَٱلْعُزَّىٰHave you considered al-Lat and al-Uzza,
53:20وَمَنَوٰةَ ٱلثَّالِثَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰٓand Manat, the third, the other?
53:21أَلَكُمُ ٱلذَّكَرُ وَلَهُ ٱلْأُنثَىٰAre the males yours, and the females his?
53:22تِلْكَ إِذًا قِسْمَةٌ ضِيزَىٰٓThat, then, would be an unjust division.
53:23إِنْ هِىَ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءٌ سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَـٰنٍ ۚ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ وَمَا تَهْوَى ٱلْأَنفُسُ ۖ وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّن رَّبِّهِمُ ٱلْهُدَىٰٓThese are nothing but names you have invented — you and your forefathers — for which God has sent down no authority. They follow only conjecture and what their lower selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord.
53:24أَمْ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ مَا تَمَنَّىٰOr shall the human have whatever he desires?
53:25فَلِلَّهِ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةُ وَٱلْأُولَىٰTo God belong the last and the first.
53:26۞ وَكَم مِّن مَّلَكٍ فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ لَا تُغْنِى شَفَـٰعَتُهُمْ شَيْـًٔا إِلَّا مِنۢ بَعْدِ أَن يَأْذَنَ ٱللَّهُ لِمَن يَشَآءُ وَيَرْضَىٰٓAnd how many angels are in the heavens whose intercession avails nothing — except after God grants permission to whom he wills and accepts.
53:27إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ لَيُسَمُّونَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ تَسْمِيَةَ ٱلْأُنثَىٰThose who do not believe in the hereafter give the angels female names.
53:28وَمَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ ۖ إِن يَتَّبِعُونَ إِلَّا ٱلظَّنَّ ۖ وَإِنَّ ٱلظَّنَّ لَا يُغْنِى مِنَ ٱلْحَقِّ شَيْـًٔاThey have no knowledge of this; they follow nothing but conjecture, and conjecture is no substitute for the truth.
53:29فَأَعْرِضْ عَن مَّن تَوَلَّىٰ عَن ذِكْرِنَا وَلَمْ يُرِدْ إِلَّا ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَاSo turn away from anyone who turns his back on our remembrance and wants nothing but the life of this world.
53:30ذَٰلِكَ مَبْلَغُهُم مِّنَ ٱلْعِلْمِ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَن سَبِيلِهِۦ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱهْتَدَىٰThat is the limit of their knowledge. Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from his path, and he knows best who is guided.
53:31وَلِلَّهِ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ لِيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسَـٰٓـُٔوا۟ بِمَا عَمِلُوا۟ وَيَجْزِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَحْسَنُوا۟ بِٱلْحُسْنَىTo God belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, so that he may repay those who do evil for what they have done, and repay those who do good with the finest reward.
53:32ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْتَنِبُونَ كَبَـٰٓئِرَ ٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْفَوَٰحِشَ إِلَّا ٱللَّمَمَ ۚ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ وَٰسِعُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ ۚ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِكُمْ إِذْ أَنشَأَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ وَإِذْ أَنتُمْ أَجِنَّةٌ فِى بُطُونِ أُمَّهَـٰتِكُمْ ۖ فَلَا تُزَكُّوٓا۟ أَنفُسَكُمْ ۖ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَنِ ٱتَّقَىٰٓThose who avoid the major sins and shameful deeds, save for slight lapses — indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He knows you best, from when he brought you forth from the earth and when you were hidden in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim purity for yourselves; he knows best who is mindful of him.
53:33أَفَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى تَوَلَّىٰHave you seen the one who turned away,
53:34وَأَعْطَىٰ قَلِيلًا وَأَكْدَىٰٓand gave a little, then withheld?
53:35أَعِندَهُۥ عِلْمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَهُوَ يَرَىٰٓDoes he have knowledge of the unseen, so that he sees?
53:36أَمْ لَمْ يُنَبَّأْ بِمَا فِى صُحُفِ مُوسَىٰOr has he not been told what is in the scriptures of Musa,
53:37وَإِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلَّذِى وَفَّىٰٓand Ibrahim, who fulfilled what was asked of him —
53:38أَلَّا تَزِرُ وَازِرَةٌ وِزْرَ أُخْرَىٰthat no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another,
53:39وَأَن لَّيْسَ لِلْإِنسَـٰنِ إِلَّا مَا سَعَىٰand that a person will have only what they strove for,
53:40وَأَنَّ سَعْيَهُۥ سَوْفَ يُرَىٰand that his striving will be seen,
53:41ثُمَّ يُجْزَىٰهُ ٱلْجَزَآءَ ٱلْأَوْفَىٰand then be repaid for it in full,
53:42وَأَنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلْمُنتَهَىٰand that to your Lord is the final return,
53:43وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَضْحَكَ وَأَبْكَىٰand that it is he who brings laughter and tears,
53:44وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَمَاتَ وَأَحْيَاand that it is he who brings death and gives life,
53:45وَأَنَّهُۥ خَلَقَ ٱلزَّوْجَيْنِ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰand that he created the two mates, the male and the female,
53:46مِن نُّطْفَةٍ إِذَا تُمْنَىٰfrom a drop of fluid when it is emitted,
53:47وَأَنَّ عَلَيْهِ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُخْرَىٰand that upon him rests the second bringing-forth,
53:48وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ أَغْنَىٰ وَأَقْنَىٰand that it is he who enriches and grants possessions,
53:49وَأَنَّهُۥ هُوَ رَبُّ ٱلشِّعْرَىٰand that he is the Lord of Sirius;
53:50وَأَنَّهُۥٓ أَهْلَكَ عَادًا ٱلْأُولَىٰand that it was he who destroyed the ancient people of 'Ad,
53:51وَثَمُودَا۟ فَمَآ أَبْقَىٰand Thamud — none were spared —
53:52وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ هُمْ أَظْلَمَ وَأَطْغَىٰand the people of Nuh before them — they were even more unjust and more transgressing.
53:53وَٱلْمُؤْتَفِكَةَ أَهْوَىٰand the overturned cities he cast down,
53:54فَغَشَّىٰهَا مَا غَشَّىٰand covered it with what covered it.
53:55فَبِأَىِّ ءَالَآءِ رَبِّكَ تَتَمَارَىٰSo which of your Lord's blessings will you dispute?
53:56هَـٰذَا نَذِيرٌ مِّنَ ٱلنُّذُرِ ٱلْأُولَىٰٓThis is a warner like the warners of old.
53:57أَزِفَتِ ٱلْـَٔازِفَةُThe looming hour draws near.
53:58لَيْسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَاشِفَةٌnone but God can unveil it.
53:59أَفَمِنْ هَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ تَعْجَبُونَDo you marvel at this account?
53:60وَتَضْحَكُونَ وَلَا تَبْكُونَand you laugh and do not weep,
53:61وَأَنتُمْ سَـٰمِدُونَwhile you amuse yourselves?
53:62فَٱسْجُدُوا۟ لِلَّهِ وَٱعْبُدُوا۟ ۩So prostrate to God and worship.
