Chapter 54 of the Qur'an · “The Moon” · 55 verses · revealed in Makkah
54:1 ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُThe hour has drawn near, and the moon has split.
54:2وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّAnd whenever they see a sign, they turn away and say, "Persistent magic."
54:3وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّThey denied and followed their own desires — and every matter has its settled end.
54:4وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌAnd there has come to them news enough to deter them,
54:5حِكْمَةٌۢ بَـٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُfar-reaching wisdom — yet the warnings are of no use.
54:6فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍSo turn away from them. On the day the caller calls to a dreadful thing,
54:7خُشَّعًا أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌtheir eyes lowered, they will come forth from the graves like scattered locusts,
54:8مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌrushing toward the caller, the deniers will say, "This is a harsh day."
54:9۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَBefore them, the people of Nuh denied — they denied our servant and said, "A madman," and he was driven away.
54:10فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْSo he called upon his Lord: "I am overpowered, so help me prevail."
54:11فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍSo we opened the gates of the sky with water pouring down,
54:12وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَAnd we caused the earth to burst forth with springs, and the waters met for a purpose already decreed.
54:13وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍAnd we carried him on a vessel of planks and nails,
54:14تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَsailing under our watchful eyes, a reward for the one who had been rejected.
54:15وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍAnd we left it as a sign — so is there anyone who will take heed?
54:16فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِHow severe was my punishment and my warning!
54:17وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍAnd we have indeed made the Qur'an easy to remember — so is there anyone who will take heed?
54:18كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ'Ad rejected the truth — and how severe was my punishment, how true my warnings.
54:19إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّIndeed, we sent against them a howling wind on a day of relentless misfortune,
54:20تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍtearing people away as if they were trunks of uprooted palm trees.
54:21فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِHow severe was my punishment and my warning!
54:22وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍAnd we have indeed made the Qur'an easy to remember — so is there anyone who will take heed?
54:23كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِThamud rejected the warnings.
54:24فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍThey said, "A mere human from among us, one man — are we to follow him? Then we would surely be lost and out of our minds.
54:25أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌHas the reminder been cast down on him alone, out of all of us? No — he is a brazen liar.
54:26سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُTomorrow they will know who is the insolent liar.
54:27إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْIndeed, we are sending the she-camel as a test for them, so watch them and be patient.
54:28وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌAnd tell them that the water is to be shared between them; each turn at drinking is to be attended.
54:29فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَBut they called their companion, and he took up the blade and hamstrung her.
54:30فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِHow severe was my punishment and my warning!
54:31إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِIndeed, we sent against them a single blast, and they became like the dry stubble of a pen-builder.
54:32وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍAnd we have indeed made the Qur'an easy to remember — so is there anyone who will take heed?
54:33كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِThe people of Lut denied the warnings.
54:34إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍIndeed, we sent against them a storm of stones, except the family of Lut — we saved them before dawn,
54:35نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَa blessing from us. Thus do we reward whoever gives thanks.
54:36وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِHe had warned them of our crushing blow, but they cast doubt on the warnings.
54:37وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِThey even demanded his guests from him, so we blotted out their eyes. Taste my punishment and my warnings!
54:38وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّAnd in the early morning, a lasting punishment came upon them.
54:39فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِSo taste my punishment and my warnings.
54:40وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍAnd we have indeed made the Qur'an easy to remember — so is there anyone who will take heed?
54:41وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُAnd the warnings came to the people of Pharaoh.
54:42كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍThey denied all of our signs, so we seized them with the seizing of one mighty, all-powerful.
54:43أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِAre those of you who deny the truth better than these, or do you have some exemption in the scriptures?
54:44أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌOr do they say, "We are a united force, victorious"?
54:45سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَThe host will be routed and will turn their backs in flight.
54:46بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّNo — the hour is their appointed time, and the hour is more calamitous and more bitter.
54:47إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍIndeed, the guilty are lost in error and madness.
54:48يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَOn the day they are dragged into the fire on their faces: "Taste the touch of saqar."
54:49إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍIndeed, we have created everything in due measure.
54:50وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِAnd our command is but a single act, swift as the blink of an eye.
54:51وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍAnd we have destroyed the likes of you before — so is there any who will take heed?
54:52وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِAnd everything they did is recorded in the scrolls,
54:53وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌand everything, small and great, is inscribed.
54:54إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍIndeed, those mindful of God will be among gardens and rivers,
54:55فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭin a seat of truth, in the presence of a Sovereign, all-powerful.
