Chapter 76 of the Qur'an · “The Man” · 31 verses · revealed in Madinah
76:1 هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ حِينٌ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْـًٔا مَّذْكُورًاWas there not a period of time when man was nothing to speak of ?
76:2إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًاWe created man from a drop of mingled fluid to put him to the test; We gave him hearing and sight;
76:3إِنَّا هَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًاWe guided him to the right path, whether he was grateful or not.
76:4إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ سَلَـٰسِلَا۟ وَأَغْلَـٰلًا وَسَعِيرًاWe have prepared chains, iron collars, and blazing Fire for the disbelievers, but
76:5إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًاthe righteous will have a drink mixed with kafur,
76:6عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًاa spring for God’s servants, which flows abundantly at their wish.
76:7يُوفُونَ بِٱلنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُۥ مُسْتَطِيرًاThey fulfil their vows; they fear a day of widespread woes;
76:8وَيُطْعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًاthey give food to the poor, the orphan, and the captive, though they love it themselves,
76:9إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ ٱللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَآءً وَلَا شُكُورًاsaying, ‘We feed you for the sake of God alone: We seek neither recompense nor thanks from you.
76:10إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًاWe fear the Day of our Lord––a woefully grim Day.’
76:11فَوَقَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّىٰهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًاSo God will save them from the woes of that Day, give them radiance and gladness,
76:12وَجَزَىٰهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًاand reward them, for their steadfastness, with a Garden and silken robes.
76:13مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ ۖ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًاThey will sit on couches, feeling neither scorching heat nor biting cold,
76:14وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَـٰلُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًاwith shady [branches] spread above them and clusters of fruit hanging close at hand.
76:15وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِـَٔانِيَةٍ مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا۠They will be served with silver plates
76:16قَوَارِيرَا۟ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًاand gleaming silver goblets according to their fancy,
76:17وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنجَبِيلًاand they will be given a drink infused with ginger
76:18عَيْنًا فِيهَا تُسَمَّىٰ سَلْسَبِيلًاfrom a spring called Salsabil.
76:19۞ وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ حَسِبْتَهُمْ لُؤْلُؤًا مَّنثُورًاEverlasting youths will attend them––if you could see them, you would think they were scattered pearls––
76:20وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًاand if you were to look around, you would see bliss and great wealth:
76:21عَـٰلِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ ۖ وَحُلُّوٓا۟ أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ وَسَقَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُورًاthey will wear garments of green silk and brocade; they will be adorned with silver bracelets; their Lord will give them a pure drink.
76:22إِنَّ هَـٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَآءً وَكَانَ سَعْيُكُم مَّشْكُورًا[It will be said], ‘This is your reward. Your endeavours are appreciated.’
76:23إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَنزِيلًاWe Ourself have sent down this Quran to you [Prophet] in gradual revelation.
76:24فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ ءَاثِمًا أَوْ كَفُورًاAwait your Lord’s Judgement with patience; do not yield to any of these sinners or disbelievers;
76:25وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًاremember the name of your Lord at dawn and in the evening;
76:26وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَٱسْجُدْ لَهُۥ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًاbow down before Him, and glorify Him at length by night.
76:27إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ يُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَآءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًاThese people love the fleeting life. They put aside [all thoughts of] a Heavy Day.
76:28نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَآ أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَآ أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًاYet We created them; We strengthened their constitution; if We please, We can replace such people completely.
76:29إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًاThis is a reminder. Let whoever wishes, take the way to his Lord.
76:30وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًاBut you will only wish to do so if God wills- God is all knowing, all wise-
76:31يُدْخِلُ مَن يَشَآءُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ وَٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًۢاHe admits whoever He will into His Mercy and has prepared a painful torment for the disbelievers.
