Surah Al-Insan — 76:24

فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ ءَاثِمًا أَوْ كَفُورًا

Fasbir lihukmi Rabbika wa laa tuti' minhum aasiman aw kafooraa

Await your Lord’s Judgement with patience; do not yield to any of these sinners or disbelievers;

So be patient for your Lord's decree, and do not obey any sinner or ungrateful one among them.

Reflection

Kafūr, the ungrateful one, is the intensive form the surah used at 76:3, where the human being is guided and left to be grateful or ungrateful; near its close the same word describes someone the Prophet is told not to obey. Grammarians paused over the aw joining the two descriptions, since in a prohibition it forbids yielding to either one on his own, leaving no single concession open. Early reports attached the pair to Meccan leaders who had offered terms.
