What does “wa ma alaina illal balagh” mean (Qur’an 36:17)?

Wa mā ʿalaynā illā al-balāgh al-mubīn is a sentence spoken by messengers in Surah Ya-Sin, and it reads: “And nothing rests on us but to deliver the message clearly.” [Qur’an 36:17]. In Arabic it is وَمَا عَلَيْنَآ إِلَّا ٱلْبَلَـٰغُ ٱلْمُبِينُ, and the transliterations people usually type, “wa ma alaina illal balagh” and “wama alaina illal bala”, are that same line. Word by word: wa mā ʿalaynā is “there is nothing upon us”, illā is “except”, al-balāgh is the delivering of a message, and al-mubīn means clear or plain.

The words close an exchange. God sets out a parable of “the people of the town, when the messengers came to them.” [Qur’an 36:13]. Two are sent and rejected, a third comes to strengthen them, and the townspeople answer, “You are nothing but human beings like us.” (36:15). The messengers reply, “Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you,” (36:16) and then mark the edge of what they are answerable for, in the line above. The town answers with a threat: “We see you as a bad omen.” (36:18). The messengers keep delivering anyway, since delivery was the whole of their charge.

The same limit is drawn for every messenger. “The Messenger's only duty is to deliver the message.” [Qur’an 5:99]. Surah ar-Ra‘d divides the work openly: “your duty is only to deliver the message; the reckoning is ours.” (13:40). Surah al-Ghashiyah puts it to the Prophet ﷺ across two lines: “So remind them — your task is only to remind.” and “you are not set over them as a controller.” (88:21–22).

Carried into ordinary life, the phrase marks where your responsibility ends. Say what is true, say it clearly and kindly, then leave the outcome with God, who has said “There is no compulsion in the way of life.” [Qur’an 2:256]. Scholars discuss how much of balāgh falls on every believer and how much belonged to the messengers by their office, and they draw that scope differently. For anything binding on you, ask a knowledgeable scholar you trust.
