Chapter 72 of the Qur'an · “The Jinn” · 28 verses · revealed in Makkah
Say: it has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened in and said, 'We have heard a wondrous recitation
It guides to right conduct, so we have believed in it, and we will never associate anyone with our Lord.
72:3وَأَنَّهُۥ تَعَـٰلَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا ٱتَّخَذَ صَـٰحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًاand that the majesty of our Lord — exalted is he — has taken neither consort nor child,
And the fool among us used to say outrageous things about God.
And we had assumed that neither humans nor jinn would ever speak a lie about God.
And there were men among humankind who sought refuge with men among the jinn, and so they only increased them in burden.
And they thought, as you thought, that God would never raise anyone up.
And we reached toward the heaven and found it filled with mighty guards and blazing flames.
And we used to sit there in positions to listen, but whoever listens now will find a blazing flame lying in wait for him.
And we do not know whether harm is intended for those on earth, or whether their Lord intends right guidance for them.
Among us are the righteous, and among us are those who fall short of that; we have followed divergent paths.
And we knew that we could never thwart God on earth, nor could we escape him by flight.
And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it. Whoever believes in his Lord fears neither loss nor oppression.
Among us are those who surrender, and among us are those who deviate. Whoever surrenders has sought out the right path.
But as for those who deviate from justice, they are firewood for jahannam.
And had they kept straight upon the path, we would have given them abundant water to drink,
72:17لِّنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَن يُعْرِضْ عَن ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِۦ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًاto test them by it. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord, he will drive into a mounting punishment.
The places of worship belong to God, so call upon no one alongside God.
And when the servant of God stood calling upon him, they nearly pressed in on him in throngs.
Say, "I call only upon my Lord, and I associate no one with him."
Say, "I hold no power to harm you or to guide you rightly."
Say: no one can shield me from God, and apart from him I will find no refuge.
72:23إِلَّا بَلَـٰغًا مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِسَـٰلَـٰتِهِۦ ۚ وَمَن يَعْصِ ٱللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُۥ فَإِنَّ لَهُۥ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهَآ أَبَدًاonly a delivery from God and his messages. Whoever disobeys God and his Messenger — for him is the fire of jahannam, where they will remain forever.
Until, when they see what they are promised, they will know who is weaker in helpers and fewer in number.
Say, "I do not know whether what you are promised is near, or whether my Lord has set a distant term for it."
72:26عَـٰلِمُ ٱلْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِۦٓ أَحَدًاthe Knower of the unseen — he discloses his unseen to no one,
72:27إِلَّا مَنِ ٱرْتَضَىٰ مِن رَّسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَسْلُكُ مِنۢ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِۦ رَصَدًاexcept to a messenger he has chosen — and then he sends watchers before him and behind him
72:28لِّيَعْلَمَ أَن قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا۟ رِسَـٰلَـٰتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ عَدَدًۢاso that he may know they have delivered the messages of their Lord, and that he encompasses all that is with them, and has counted every single thing.
