Chapter 71 of the Qur'an · “Noah” · 28 verses · revealed in Makkah
71:1 إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوْمِهِۦٓ أَنْ أَنذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَأْتِيَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌIndeed, we sent Nuh to his people: "Warn your people before a painful punishment comes upon them."
71:2قَالَ يَـٰقَوْمِ إِنِّى لَكُمْ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌHe said, "My people, I am a clear warner to you:
71:3أَنِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِworship God, be mindful of him, and obey me.
71:4يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَيُؤَخِّرْكُمْ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٍ مُّسَمًّى ۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُ ۖ لَوْ كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَGod will forgive you your sins and grant you respite until an appointed term. When God's appointed term arrives, it cannot be postponed — if only you knew.
71:5قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُ قَوْمِى لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًاHe said, "My Lord, I have called my people night and day,
71:6فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِىٓ إِلَّا فِرَارًاbut my call only made them flee further.
71:7وَإِنِّى كُلَّمَا دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوٓا۟ أَصَـٰبِعَهُمْ فِىٓ ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَٱسْتَغْشَوْا۟ ثِيَابَهُمْ وَأَصَرُّوا۟ وَٱسْتَكْبَرُوا۟ ٱسْتِكْبَارًاAnd every time I called them so that you might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, wrapped themselves in their garments, persisted, and grew arrogant with utter arrogance.
71:8ثُمَّ إِنِّى دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَارًاThen I called them openly,
71:9ثُمَّ إِنِّىٓ أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَارًاThen I called out to them openly, and I spoke to them in private.
71:10فَقُلْتُ ٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارًاI said: ask forgiveness of your Lord — indeed, he is ever-forgiving.
71:11يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًاand he will send the sky upon you in abundant rain,
71:12وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَٰلٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّـٰتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَـٰرًاand he will increase you in wealth and children, and grant you gardens, and grant you rivers.
71:13مَّا لَكُمْ لَا تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارًاWhat is wrong with you, that you do not ascribe to God his due majesty?
71:14وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَارًاwhen God created you stage by stage?
71:15أَلَمْ تَرَوْا۟ كَيْفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَـٰوَٰتٍ طِبَاقًاDo you not see how God created seven heavens, one above the other,
71:16وَجَعَلَ ٱلْقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورًا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمْسَ سِرَاجًاand placed the moon among them as a light, and made the sun a lamp?
71:17وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَرْضِ نَبَاتًاAnd God caused you to grow from the earth like a plant,
71:18ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجًاthen he will return you into it, and bring you forth again.
71:19وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلْأَرْضَ بِسَاطًاAnd God has spread out the earth for you as an expanse,
71:20لِّتَسْلُكُوا۟ مِنْهَا سُبُلًا فِجَاجًاso that you may travel its wide paths.'"
71:21قَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِى وَٱتَّبَعُوا۟ مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارًاNuh said, "My Lord, they have disobeyed me and followed those whose wealth and children only add to their ruin.
71:22وَمَكَرُوا۟ مَكْرًا كُبَّارًاAnd they have schemed a monstrous scheme,
71:23وَقَالُوا۟ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمْ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدًّا وَلَا سُوَاعًا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْرًاAnd they said, 'Do not abandon your gods — do not abandon Wadd, nor Suwa, nor Yaghuth, nor Yauq, nor Nasr.'
71:24وَقَدْ أَضَلُّوا۟ كَثِيرًا ۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَـٰلًاThey have led many astray. Lord, increase the wrongdoers in nothing but error.
71:25مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٔـٰتِهِمْ أُغْرِقُوا۟ فَأُدْخِلُوا۟ نَارًا فَلَمْ يَجِدُوا۟ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارًاBecause of their wrongs they were drowned and made to enter a fire, and they found no helpers for themselves apart from God.
71:26وَقَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرْ عَلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ مِنَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًاAnd Nuh said, "My Lord, do not leave upon the earth a single dweller from among those who deny.
71:27إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرْهُمْ يُضِلُّوا۟ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا فَاجِرًا كَفَّارًاIf you leave them, they will lead your servants astray and will father none but the depraved and the ungrateful.
71:28رَّبِّ ٱغْفِرْ لِى وَلِوَٰلِدَىَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيْتِىَ مُؤْمِنًا وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنَـٰتِ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارًۢاMy Lord, forgive me and my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and the believing men and the believing women — and increase the wrongdoers in nothing but ruin.
