Chapter 73 of the Qur'an · “The Enshrouded One” · 20 verses · revealed in Makkah
O you wrapped in your cloak,
Stand through the night, all but a little —
73:3نِّصْفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصْ مِنْهُ قَلِيلًاhalf of it, or a little less,
73:4أَوْ زِدْ عَلَيْهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيلًاor a little more — and recite the Qur'an with measured clarity.
Indeed, we will lay upon you a weighty word.
Indeed, the night vigil leaves a deeper imprint and steadies the word.
By day you have a long stretch of occupation.
And remember the name of your Lord, and devote yourself to him completely.
Lord of the east and the west — there is no god but he, so take him as your trustee.
Bear patiently what they say, and part from them with a gracious parting.
And leave to me the deniers, those who live in ease, and give them a little more time.
Indeed, with us are shackles and jahim,
73:13وَطَعَامًا ذَا غُصَّةٍ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمًاand food that chokes, and a painful punishment.
On the day the earth and the mountains tremble, and the mountains become a heap of pouring sand.
Indeed, we have sent to you a messenger as a witness over you, just as we sent a messenger to Pharaoh.
But Pharaoh defied the Messenger, so we seized him with a devastating grip.
So how, if you deny the truth, will you guard yourselves against a day that will turn children's hair grey,
The sky will be torn apart by it; his promise is bound to be fulfilled.
This is a reminder. Whoever wills, let them take a path to their Lord.
Indeed, your Lord knows that you stand in prayer for nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or a third — as does a group of those with you. And God measures the night and the day, knowing that you cannot sustain it, so he has turned to you in mercy. Recite, then, what is easy of the Qur'an. God knows that some among you will be ill, and others traveling through the land seeking God's bounty, and others fighting in the way of God. So recite what is easy of it, and establish the prayer, and give the purifying alms, and lend to God a beautiful loan. Whatever good you send forward for yourselves, you will find it with God — better and greater in reward. And seek God's forgiveness. Indeed, God is forgiving, merciful.
