Surah Al-Qamar — 54:24

فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍ

Faqaalooo a-basharam minnaa waahidan nattabi'uhooo innaa izal lafee dalaalinw wa su'ur

They said, "A mere human from among us, one man — are we to follow him? Then we would surely be lost and out of our minds.

Reflection

Thamud stack three objections to the prophet Salih into a few words: basharan, a human; minnā, one of us; wāḥidan, a single man set against the whole tribe. They predict that following him would leave them in ḍalāl wa suʿur, error and madness, and suʿur can also mean blazing fires. The identical pair comes back in verse 47 of this surah as the condition of the guilty, so the fate they claimed to be avoiding is where the surah places them.
