Surah Al-Mutaffifin — المطففين

Chapter 83 of the Qur'an · “The Defrauding” · 36 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 83:1 وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ Woe to those who give short measure,
2. 83:2 ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ who demand of other people full measure for themselves,
3. 83:3 وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ but give less than they should when it is they who weigh or measure for others!
4. 83:4 أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ Do these people not realize that they will be raised up
5. 83:5 لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ on a mighty Day,
6. 83:6 يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ a Day when everyone will stand before the Lord of the Worlds?
7. 83:7 كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ No indeed! The list of the wicked is in Sijjin––
8. 83:8 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ what will explain to you what Sijjin is?––
9. 83:9 كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ a clearly numbered list.
10. 83:10 وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ Woe on that day to the deniers,
11. 83:11 ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ those who deny the Day of Judgement!
12. 83:12 وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ Only the evil aggressor denies it:
13. 83:13 إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ when Our revelations are recited to him, he says, ‘Ancient fables!’
14. 83:14 كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ No indeed! Their hearts are encrusted with what they have done.
15. 83:15 كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ No indeed! On that Day they will be screened off from their Lord,
16. 83:16 ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ they will burn in Hell,
17. 83:17 ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ and they will be told, ‘This is what you called a lie.’
18. 83:18 كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ No indeed! The list of the truly good is in 'Illiyyin––
19. 83:19 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ what will explain to you what 'Illiyyin is?––
20. 83:20 كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ a clearly written list,
21. 83:21 يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ witnessed by those brought near.
22. 83:22 إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ The truly good will live in bliss,
23. 83:23 عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ seated on couches, gazing around.
24. 83:24 تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ You will recognize on their faces the radiance of bliss.
25. 83:25 يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ They will be served a sealed nectar,
26. 83:26 خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ its seal [perfumed with] a fragrant herb––let those who strive, strive for this––
27. 83:27 وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ mixed with the water of Tasnim,
28. 83:28 عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ a spring from which those brought near will drink.
29. 83:29 إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ The wicked used to laugh at the believers––
30. 83:30 وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ they would wink at one another when the believers passed by them,
31. 83:31 وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ joke about them when they got back to their own people,
32. 83:32 وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ and say, when they saw them, ‘These people are misguided,’
33. 83:33 وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ though they were not sent to be their keepers-
34. 83:34 فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ so today the believers are laughing at the disbelievers
35. 83:35 عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ as they sit on couches, gazing around.
36. 83:36 هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ Have the disbelievers [not] been repaid for their deeds?
