Surah An-Naba — النبإ

Chapter 78 of the Qur'an · “The Tidings” · 40 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 78:1 عَمَّ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ What are they asking about?
2. 78:2 عَنِ ٱلنَّبَإِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ The momentous announcement
3. 78:3 ٱلَّذِى هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ about which they differ.
4. 78:4 كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ They will find out.
5. 78:5 ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ In the end they will find out.
6. 78:6 أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ ٱلْأَرْضَ مِهَـٰدًا Did We not make the earth smooth,
7. 78:7 وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا and make the mountains to keep it stable?
8. 78:8 وَخَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا Did We not create you in pairs,
9. 78:9 وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا give you sleep for rest,
10. 78:10 وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا the night as a cover,
11. 78:11 وَجَعَلْنَا ٱلنَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا and the day for your livelihood?
12. 78:12 وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا Did We not build seven strong [heavens] above you,
13. 78:13 وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا and make a blazing lamp?
14. 78:14 وَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمُعْصِرَٰتِ مَآءً ثَجَّاجًا Did We not send water pouring down from the clouds
15. 78:15 لِّنُخْرِجَ بِهِۦ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا to bring forth with it grain, plants,
16. 78:16 وَجَنَّـٰتٍ أَلْفَافًا and luxuriant gardens?
17. 78:17 إِنَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَـٰتًا A time has been appointed for the Day of Decision:
18. 78:18 يَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِى ٱلصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا a Day when the Trumpet will sound and you will come forward in crowds,
19. 78:19 وَفُتِحَتِ ٱلسَّمَآءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَٰبًا when the sky will open up like wide portals,
20. 78:20 وَسُيِّرَتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا when the mountains will vanish like a mirage.
21. 78:21 إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا Hell lies in wait,
22. 78:22 لِّلطَّـٰغِينَ مَـَٔابًا a home for oppressors
23. 78:23 لَّـٰبِثِينَ فِيهَآ أَحْقَابًا to stay in for a long, long time,
24. 78:24 لَّا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا where they will taste no coolness nor drink
25. 78:25 إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا except one that is scalding and dark––
26. 78:26 جَزَآءً وِفَاقًا a fitting requital,
27. 78:27 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا for they did not fear a reckoning,
28. 78:28 وَكَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كِذَّابًا and they rejected Our messages as lies.
29. 78:29 وَكُلَّ شَىْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَـٰهُ كِتَـٰبًا We have recorded everything in a Record.
30. 78:30 فَذُوقُوا۟ فَلَن نَّزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا ‘Taste this: all you will get from Us is more torment.’
31. 78:31 إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا For those who were aware of God there is supreme fulfilment:
32. 78:32 حَدَآئِقَ وَأَعْنَـٰبًا private gardens, vineyards,
33. 78:33 وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا nubile, well-matched companions,
34. 78:34 وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا and an overflowing cup.
35. 78:35 لَّا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّٰبًا There they will hear no vain or lying talk:
36. 78:36 جَزَآءً مِّن رَّبِّكَ عَطَآءً حِسَابًا a reward from your Lord, a fitting gift
37. 78:37 رَّبِّ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا from the Lord of the heavens and earth and everything between, the Lord of Mercy. They will have no authority from Him to speak.
38. 78:38 يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلرُّوحُ وَٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَّا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا On the Day when the Spirit and the angels stand in rows, they will not speak except for those to whom the Lord of Mercy gives permission, who will say only what is right.
39. 78:39 ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ مَـَٔابًا That is the Day of Truth. So whoever wishes to do so should take the path that leads to his Lord.
40. 78:40 إِنَّآ أَنذَرْنَـٰكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنظُرُ ٱلْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ ٱلْكَافِرُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ تُرَٰبًۢا We have warned you of imminent torment, on the Day when every person will see what their own hands have sent ahead for them, when the disbeliever will say, ‘If only I were dust!’
