وَٱلْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا
Wal jibaala au taada
and make the mountains to keep it stable?
and the mountains as stakes?
Awtad are tent-pegs, and the word in the verse before this one, mihad, is bedding spread out for sleep. Two words, and the whole earth becomes a pitched tent, an image belonging to people who struck camp for a living. The list runs on to verse 16, answering the argument about resurrection raised in verse 1 by pointing at arrangements already standing.
