Chapter 54 of the Qur'an · “The Moon” · 55 verses · revealed in Makkah
54:1 ٱقْتَرَبَتِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ وَٱنشَقَّ ٱلْقَمَرُThe Hour draws near; the moon is split in two.
54:2وَإِن يَرَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يُعْرِضُوا۟ وَيَقُولُوا۟ سِحْرٌ مُّسْتَمِرٌّWhenever the disbelievers see a sign, they turn away and say, ‘Same old sorcery!’
54:3وَكَذَّبُوا۟ وَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلُّ أَمْرٍ مُّسْتَقِرٌّThey reject the truth and follow their own desires––everything is recorded––
54:4وَلَقَدْ جَآءَهُم مِّنَ ٱلْأَنۢبَآءِ مَا فِيهِ مُزْدَجَرٌalthough warning tales that should have restrained them have come down to them––
54:5حِكْمَةٌۢ بَـٰلِغَةٌ ۖ فَمَا تُغْنِ ٱلنُّذُرُfarreaching wisdom––but these warnings do not help:
54:6فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ ۘ يَوْمَ يَدْعُ ٱلدَّاعِ إِلَىٰ شَىْءٍ نُّكُرٍso [Prophet] turn away from them. On the Day the Summoner will summon them to a horrific event,
54:7خُشَّعًا أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ كَأَنَّهُمْ جَرَادٌ مُّنتَشِرٌeyes downcast, they will come out of their graves like swarming locusts
54:8مُّهْطِعِينَ إِلَى ٱلدَّاعِ ۖ يَقُولُ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَسِرٌrushing towards the Summoner. The disbelievers will cry, ‘This is a stern day!’
54:9۞ كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ فَكَذَّبُوا۟ عَبْدَنَا وَقَالُوا۟ مَجْنُونٌ وَٱزْدُجِرَThe people of Noah rejected the truth before them: they rejected Our servant, saying, ‘He is mad!’ Noah was rebuked,
54:10فَدَعَا رَبَّهُۥٓ أَنِّى مَغْلُوبٌ فَٱنتَصِرْand so he called upon his Lord, ‘I am defeated: help me!’
54:11فَفَتَحْنَآ أَبْوَٰبَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ بِمَآءٍ مُّنْهَمِرٍSo We opened the gates of the sky with torrential water,
54:12وَفَجَّرْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ عُيُونًا فَٱلْتَقَى ٱلْمَآءُ عَلَىٰٓ أَمْرٍ قَدْ قُدِرَburst the earth with gushing springs: the waters met for a preordained purpose.
54:13وَحَمَلْنَـٰهُ عَلَىٰ ذَاتِ أَلْوَٰحٍ وَدُسُرٍWe carried him along on a vessel of planks and nails
54:14تَجْرِى بِأَعْيُنِنَا جَزَآءً لِّمَن كَانَ كُفِرَthat floated under Our watchful eye, a reward for the one who had been rejected.
54:15وَلَقَد تَّرَكْنَـٰهَآ ءَايَةً فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍWe have left this as a sign: will anyone take heed?
54:16فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِHow [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!
54:17وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍWe have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed?
54:18كَذَّبَتْ عَادٌ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِThe people of 'Ad also rejected the truth. How [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!
54:19إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ رِيحًا صَرْصَرًا فِى يَوْمِ نَحْسٍ مُّسْتَمِرٍّWe released a howling wind against them on a day of terrible disaster;
54:20تَنزِعُ ٱلنَّاسَ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ مُّنقَعِرٍit swept people away like uprooted palm trunks.
54:21فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِHow [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!
54:22وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍWe have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed?
54:23كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِٱلنُّذُرِThe people of Thamud also rejected the warnings:
54:24فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَبَشَرًا مِّنَّا وَٰحِدًا نَّتَّبِعُهُۥٓ إِنَّآ إِذًا لَّفِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍthey said, ‘What? A man? Why should we follow a lone man from amongst ourselves? That would be misguided; quite insane!
54:25أَءُلْقِىَ ٱلذِّكْرُ عَلَيْهِ مِنۢ بَيْنِنَا بَلْ هُوَ كَذَّابٌ أَشِرٌWould a mes-sage be given to him alone out of all of us? No, he is an insolent liar!’
54:26سَيَعْلَمُونَ غَدًا مَّنِ ٱلْكَذَّابُ ٱلْأَشِرُ‘Tomorrow they will know who is the insolent liar,
54:27إِنَّا مُرْسِلُوا۟ ٱلنَّاقَةِ فِتْنَةً لَّهُمْ فَٱرْتَقِبْهُمْ وَٱصْطَبِرْfor We shall send them a she-camel to test them: so watch them [Salih] and be patient.
54:28وَنَبِّئْهُمْ أَنَّ ٱلْمَآءَ قِسْمَةٌۢ بَيْنَهُمْ ۖ كُلُّ شِرْبٍ مُّحْتَضَرٌTell them the water is to be shared between them: each one should drink in turn.’
54:29فَنَادَوْا۟ صَاحِبَهُمْ فَتَعَاطَىٰ فَعَقَرَBut they called their companion, who took a sword and hamstrung the camel.
54:30فَكَيْفَ كَانَ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِHow [terrible] was My punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!
54:31إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ صَيْحَةً وَٰحِدَةً فَكَانُوا۟ كَهَشِيمِ ٱلْمُحْتَظِرِWe released a single mighty blast against them and they ended up like a fencemaker’s dry sticks.
54:32وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍWe have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed?
54:33كَذَّبَتْ قَوْمُ لُوطٍۭ بِٱلنُّذُرِThe people of Lot rejected the warnings.
54:34إِنَّآ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حَاصِبًا إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ۖ نَّجَّيْنَـٰهُم بِسَحَرٍWe released a stonebearing wind against them, all except the family of Lot. We saved them before dawn
54:35نِّعْمَةً مِّنْ عِندِنَا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى مَن شَكَرَas a favour from Us: this is how We reward the thankful.
54:36وَلَقَدْ أَنذَرَهُم بَطْشَتَنَا فَتَمَارَوْا۟ بِٱلنُّذُرِHe warned them of Our onslaught, but they dismissed the warning-
54:37وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدُوهُ عَن ضَيْفِهِۦ فَطَمَسْنَآ أَعْيُنَهُمْ فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِthey even demanded his guests from him- so We sealed their eyes- ‘ Taste My [terrible] punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!’-
54:38وَلَقَدْ صَبَّحَهُم بُكْرَةً عَذَابٌ مُّسْتَقِرٌّand early in the morning a punishment seized them that still remains-
54:39فَذُوقُوا۟ عَذَابِى وَنُذُرِ‘Taste My [terrible] punishment and [the fulfilment of] My warnings!’
54:40وَلَقَدْ يَسَّرْنَا ٱلْقُرْءَانَ لِلذِّكْرِ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍWe have made it easy to learn lessons from the Quran: will anyone take heed?
54:41وَلَقَدْ جَآءَ ءَالَ فِرْعَوْنَ ٱلنُّذُرُThe people of Pharaoh also received warnings.
54:42كَذَّبُوا۟ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا كُلِّهَا فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُمْ أَخْذَ عَزِيزٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍThey rejected all Our signs so We seized them with all Our might and power.
54:43أَكُفَّارُكُمْ خَيْرٌ مِّنْ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكُمْ أَمْ لَكُم بَرَآءَةٌ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِ‘Are your disbelievers any better than these? Were you given an exemption in the Scripture?’
54:44أَمْ يَقُولُونَ نَحْنُ جَمِيعٌ مُّنتَصِرٌDo they perhaps say, ‘We are a great army and we shall be victorious’?
54:45سَيُهْزَمُ ٱلْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ ٱلدُّبُرَTheir forces will be routed and they will turn tail and flee.
54:46بَلِ ٱلسَّاعَةُ مَوْعِدُهُمْ وَٱلسَّاعَةُ أَدْهَىٰ وَأَمَرُّBut the Hour is their appointed time- the Hour is more severe and bitter:
54:47إِنَّ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍ وَسُعُرٍtruly the wicked are misguided and quite insane––
54:48يَوْمَ يُسْحَبُونَ فِى ٱلنَّارِ عَلَىٰ وُجُوهِهِمْ ذُوقُوا۟ مَسَّ سَقَرَon the Day when they are dragged on their faces in Hell. ‘Feel the touch of Hell.’
54:49إِنَّا كُلَّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ بِقَدَرٍWe have created all things in due measure;
54:50وَمَآ أَمْرُنَآ إِلَّا وَٰحِدَةٌ كَلَمْحٍۭ بِٱلْبَصَرِwhen We ordain something it happens at once, in the blink of an eye;
54:51وَلَقَدْ أَهْلَكْنَآ أَشْيَاعَكُمْ فَهَلْ مِن مُّدَّكِرٍWe have destroyed the likes of you in the past. Will anyone take heed?
54:52وَكُلُّ شَىْءٍ فَعَلُوهُ فِى ٱلزُّبُرِEverything they do is noted in their records:
54:53وَكُلُّ صَغِيرٍ وَكَبِيرٍ مُّسْتَطَرٌevery action, great or small, is recorded.
54:54إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَنَهَرٍThe righteous will live securely among Gardens and rivers,
54:55فِى مَقْعَدِ صِدْقٍ عِندَ مَلِيكٍ مُّقْتَدِرٍۭsecure in the presence of an all-powerful Sovereign.
