Surah Al-Fajr — الفجر

Chapter 89 of the Qur'an · “The Dawn” · 30 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 89:1 وَٱلْفَجْرِ By the dawn,
2. 89:2 وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ and by the ten nights,
3. 89:3 وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ by the even and the odd,
4. 89:4 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ and by the night as it passes,
5. 89:5 هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ Is there not in this an oath for one who has understanding?
6. 89:6 أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with 'Ad,
7. 89:7 إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ Iram of the lofty pillars,
8. 89:8 ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ the like of which was never created in any land,
9. 89:9 وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ and Thamud, who carved the rocks in the valley,
10. 89:10 وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ and with Pharaoh, lord of the stakes —
11. 89:11 ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ those who transgressed all bounds in the land,
12. 89:12 فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ and spread great corruption there.
13. 89:13 فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ so your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
14. 89:14 إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ Indeed, your Lord is ever watchful.
15. 89:15 فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ As for the human being, when his Lord tests him by honoring him and showering him with favor, he says, "My Lord has honored me."
16. 89:16 وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ But when he tests him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
17. 89:17 كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ No indeed! You do not honor the orphan,
18. 89:18 وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ and you do not urge one another to feed the poor,
19. 89:19 وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا and you devour inheritance with greedy appetite,
20. 89:20 وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا and you love wealth with a consuming love.
21. 89:21 كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا No! When the earth is pounded to dust, pounded and pounded again,
22. 89:22 وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا and your Lord comes, and the angels, rank upon rank,
23. 89:23 وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ And on that day jahannam is brought near — on that day the human being will remember, but what good is remembrance to him then?
24. 89:24 يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى He will say, "If only I had sent something ahead for this life of mine."
25. 89:25 فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ On that day, no one will punish as he punishes,
26. 89:26 وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ and none will bind as he binds.
27. 89:27 يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ O soul at peace,
28. 89:28 ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing,
29. 89:29 فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى and enter among my servants,
30. 89:30 وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى and enter my garden.
