Surah Al-Ghashiyah — الغاشية

Chapter 88 of the Qur'an · “The Overwhelming” · 26 verses · revealed in Makkah

  1. 88:1 هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ Has the account of the overwhelming reached you?
  2. 88:2 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ On that day, faces will be downcast,
  3. 88:3 عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ laboring, exhausted,
  4. 88:4 تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً scorched by a blazing fire,
  5. 88:5 تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ given drink from a boiling spring,
  6. 88:6 لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ they will have no food except bitter thorns
  7. 88:7 لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ that neither nourishes nor relieves hunger.
  8. 88:8 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ Other faces, on that day, will be radiant,
  9. 88:9 لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ well pleased with their striving,
  10. 88:10 فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ in a lofty garden,
  11. 88:11 لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً where no idle talk is heard,
  12. 88:12 فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ in it is a flowing spring,
  13. 88:13 فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ in it are couches raised high,
  14. 88:14 وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ and cups set in place,
  15. 88:15 وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ and cushions arranged in rows,
  16. 88:16 وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ and rich carpets spread out.
  17. 88:17 أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ Do they not look at the camels — how they were created?
  18. 88:18 وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ and at the sky — how it is raised?
  19. 88:19 وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ and at the mountains — how they are set firm,
  20. 88:20 وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ and at the earth — how it was spread out?
  21. 88:21 فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ So remind them — your task is only to remind.
  22. 88:22 لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ you are not set over them as a controller.
  23. 88:23 إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ But whoever turns away and denies,
  24. 88:24 فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ God will punish them with the greatest punishment.
  25. 88:25 إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ Indeed, to us they return,
  26. 88:26 ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم then their reckoning rests with us.
