Surah Al-Mutaffifin — المطففين

Chapter 83 of the Qur'an · “The Defrauding” · 36 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 83:1 وَيْلٌ لِّلْمُطَفِّفِينَ Woe to those who short-change others,
2. 83:2 ٱلَّذِينَ إِذَا ٱكْتَالُوا۟ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ يَسْتَوْفُونَ those who, when they take a measure from others, demand it in full,
3. 83:3 وَإِذَا كَالُوهُمْ أَو وَّزَنُوهُمْ يُخْسِرُونَ but when they measure or weigh out for others, they give less.
4. 83:4 أَلَا يَظُنُّ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَنَّهُم مَّبْعُوثُونَ Do such people not realize that they will be raised up?
5. 83:5 لِيَوْمٍ عَظِيمٍ for a mighty day —
6. 83:6 يَوْمَ يَقُومُ ٱلنَّاسُ لِرَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ the day when humanity will stand before the Lord of the worlds.
7. 83:7 كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْفُجَّارِ لَفِى سِجِّينٍ No indeed! The record of the wicked is in Sijjin —
8. 83:8 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سِجِّينٌ And what will make you understand what Sijjin is?
9. 83:9 كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ an inscribed record.
10. 83:10 وَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُكَذِّبِينَ Woe, on that day, to those who deny the truth!
11. 83:11 ٱلَّذِينَ يُكَذِّبُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ those who deny the day of reckoning.
12. 83:12 وَمَا يُكَذِّبُ بِهِۦٓ إِلَّا كُلُّ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ And none deny it but every sinful transgressor.
13. 83:13 إِذَا تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِ ءَايَـٰتُنَا قَالَ أَسَـٰطِيرُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ When our signs are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the ancients."
14. 83:14 كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ ۜ رَانَ عَلَىٰ قُلُوبِهِم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَ No — what they have been earning has rusted over their hearts.
15. 83:15 كَلَّآ إِنَّهُمْ عَن رَّبِّهِمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ لَّمَحْجُوبُونَ No indeed! On that day they will be veiled from their Lord,
16. 83:16 ثُمَّ إِنَّهُمْ لَصَالُوا۟ ٱلْجَحِيمِ then they will burn in jahim.
17. 83:17 ثُمَّ يُقَالُ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تُكَذِّبُونَ Then it will be said: "This is what you used to deny."
18. 83:18 كَلَّآ إِنَّ كِتَـٰبَ ٱلْأَبْرَارِ لَفِى عِلِّيِّينَ No indeed! The record of the righteous is in 'Illiyyin —
19. 83:19 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا عِلِّيُّونَ And what will make you understand what 'Illiyyun is?
20. 83:20 كِتَـٰبٌ مَّرْقُومٌ an inscribed record.
21. 83:21 يَشْهَدُهُ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ witnessed by those brought near.
22. 83:22 إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ لَفِى نَعِيمٍ Indeed, the righteous will be in bliss,
23. 83:23 عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ On couches, looking on.
24. 83:24 تَعْرِفُ فِى وُجُوهِهِمْ نَضْرَةَ ٱلنَّعِيمِ You will recognize in their faces the radiance of bliss.
25. 83:25 يُسْقَوْنَ مِن رَّحِيقٍ مَّخْتُومٍ They will be given to drink of a sealed nectar,
26. 83:26 خِتَـٰمُهُۥ مِسْكٌ ۚ وَفِى ذَٰلِكَ فَلْيَتَنَافَسِ ٱلْمُتَنَـٰفِسُونَ its seal is musk — and for this let those who strive, strive.
27. 83:27 وَمِزَاجُهُۥ مِن تَسْنِيمٍ mixed with Tasnim,
28. 83:28 عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ a spring from which those brought near will drink.
29. 83:29 إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أَجْرَمُوا۟ كَانُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ يَضْحَكُونَ Indeed, those who were guilty used to laugh at those who believed,
30. 83:30 وَإِذَا مَرُّوا۟ بِهِمْ يَتَغَامَزُونَ and when they passed by them, they would trade mocking glances,
31. 83:31 وَإِذَا ٱنقَلَبُوٓا۟ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِمُ ٱنقَلَبُوا۟ فَكِهِينَ and when they returned to their own people, they returned amused.
32. 83:32 وَإِذَا رَأَوْهُمْ قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ لَضَآلُّونَ And when they saw them, they would say, "These people are truly lost."
33. 83:33 وَمَآ أُرْسِلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ حَـٰفِظِينَ yet they were not sent as keepers over them.
34. 83:34 فَٱلْيَوْمَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلْكُفَّارِ يَضْحَكُونَ So today, those who believed are laughing at those who denied,
35. 83:35 عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ يَنظُرُونَ On couches, looking on.
36. 83:36 هَلْ ثُوِّبَ ٱلْكُفَّارُ مَا كَانُوا۟ يَفْعَلُونَ Have the deniers been repaid for what they used to do?
