Chapter 84 of the Qur'an · “The Sundering” · 25 verses · revealed in Makkah
84:1 إِذَا ٱلسَّمَآءُ ٱنشَقَّتْWhen the sky is split open,
84:2وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْand hearkens to its Lord, as it must,
84:3وَإِذَا ٱلْأَرْضُ مُدَّتْand when the earth is stretched out,
84:4وَأَلْقَتْ مَا فِيهَا وَتَخَلَّتْand casts out what is within it and is emptied,
84:5وَأَذِنَتْ لِرَبِّهَا وَحُقَّتْand hearkens to its Lord, as it must,
84:6يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِنَّكَ كَادِحٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ كَدْحًا فَمُلَـٰقِيهِO human, you are laboring toward your Lord with hard labor, and you will meet him.
84:7فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ بِيَمِينِهِۦAs for the one given his record in his right hand,
84:8فَسَوْفَ يُحَاسَبُ حِسَابًا يَسِيرًاwill have an easy reckoning
84:9وَيَنقَلِبُ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًاand return to his people in joy.
84:10وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِىَ كِتَـٰبَهُۥ وَرَآءَ ظَهْرِهِۦBut as for the one whose record is handed to him from behind his back,
84:11فَسَوْفَ يَدْعُوا۟ ثُبُورًاwill soon cry out for destruction
84:13إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ فِىٓ أَهْلِهِۦ مَسْرُورًاIndeed, he had lived among his people in joy.
84:14إِنَّهُۥ ظَنَّ أَن لَّن يَحُورَIndeed, he thought he would never return.
84:15بَلَىٰٓ إِنَّ رَبَّهُۥ كَانَ بِهِۦ بَصِيرًاBut yes — indeed, his Lord was ever watching over him.
84:16فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِٱلشَّفَقِI swear by the twilight glow,
84:17وَٱلَّيْلِ وَمَا وَسَقَby the night and what it shrouds,
84:18وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا ٱتَّسَقَand by the moon when it grows full,
84:19لَتَرْكَبُنَّ طَبَقًا عَن طَبَقٍyou will surely pass from one stage to another.
84:20فَمَا لَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَSo what is the matter with them, that they do not believe,
84:21وَإِذَا قُرِئَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقُرْءَانُ لَا يَسْجُدُونَ ۩and when the Qur'an is recited to them, they do not prostrate?
84:22بَلِ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ يُكَذِّبُونَYet those who deny continue to reject the truth,
84:23وَٱللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يُوعُونَAnd God knows best what they harbor within.
84:24فَبَشِّرْهُم بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍSo give them news of a painful punishment,
84:25إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ لَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍۭBut those who believe and do righteous deeds — for them is a reward never ending.
