Surah 'Abasa — عبس

Chapter 80 of the Qur'an · “He Frowned” · 42 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 80:1 عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ He frowned and turned away,
2. 80:2 أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ because the blind man came to him.
3. 80:3 وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ And what could let you know — perhaps he would purify himself,
4. 80:4 أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ or take heed, so the reminder might benefit him?
5. 80:5 أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ As for the one who thinks himself self-sufficient,
6. 80:6 فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ to him you give your attention,
7. 80:7 وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ though it is not your concern if he does not purify himself.
8. 80:8 وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ But as for the one who came to you eagerly seeking,
9. 80:9 وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ and in awe of God,
10. 80:10 فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ from him you turn away, distracted.
11. 80:11 كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ No indeed — this is a reminder.
12. 80:12 فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ So whoever wills, let them take heed of it.
13. 80:13 فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ on honored pages,
14. 80:14 مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ exalted, purified,
15. 80:15 بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ by the hands of scribes,
16. 80:16 كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ noble and righteous.
17. 80:17 قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ Cursed is man — how ungrateful he is!
18. 80:18 مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ From what thing did God create him?
19. 80:19 مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ From a drop of fluid he created him and proportioned him,
20. 80:20 ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ then made the way easy for him,
21. 80:21 ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ then he causes him to die and provides him a grave,
22. 80:22 ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ Then, when he wills, he will raise him up again.
23. 80:23 كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ No! Man has not yet fulfilled what he was commanded.
24. 80:24 فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ Let the human being consider his food:
25. 80:25 أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا indeed, we pour down water in abundance,
26. 80:26 ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا then we split the earth open, cleaving it apart,
27. 80:27 فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا and we caused grain to grow in it,
28. 80:28 وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا and grapes and fresh herbs,
29. 80:29 وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا and olive trees and date palms,
30. 80:30 وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا and lush, dense gardens,
31. 80:31 وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا and fruits and pasture,
32. 80:32 مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ as provision for you and for your livestock.
33. 80:33 فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ But when the deafening blast comes—
34. 80:34 يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ the day a person flees from his brother,
35. 80:35 وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ and his mother and his father,
36. 80:36 وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ and his wife and his children,
37. 80:37 لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ on that day, every person will have concern enough to occupy them.
38. 80:38 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ on that day, some faces will be radiant,
39. 80:39 ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ laughing, rejoicing at good news.
40. 80:40 وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ and other faces, on that day, will have dust upon them,
41. 80:41 تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ overcast with darkness.
42. 80:42 أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ those are the deniers, the depraved.
