Surah Al-Muddaththir — المدثر

Chapter 74 of the Qur'an · “The Cloaked One” · 56 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 74:1 يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلْمُدَّثِّرُ O you wrapped in your cloak,
2. 74:2 قُمْ فَأَنذِرْ Arise and warn!
3. 74:3 وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ and proclaim the greatness of your Lord,
4. 74:4 وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ and purify your garments,
5. 74:5 وَٱلرُّجْزَ فَٱهْجُرْ and shun all defilement,
6. 74:6 وَلَا تَمْنُن تَسْتَكْثِرُ and do not give, seeking to gain more,
7. 74:7 وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصْبِرْ And for your Lord, be patient.
8. 74:8 فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِى ٱلنَّاقُورِ When the trumpet is sounded,
9. 74:9 فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ that day will be a day of hardship,
10. 74:10 عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ for those who deny — far from easy.
11. 74:11 ذَرْنِى وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا Leave me with the one I created alone,
12. 74:12 وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُۥ مَالًا مَّمْدُودًا and granted him abundant wealth,
13. 74:13 وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا and sons present at his side,
14. 74:14 وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمْهِيدًا and smoothed his path before him,
15. 74:15 ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ yet he craves that I give him more.
16. 74:16 كَلَّآ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا عَنِيدًا No! Indeed, he has been stubborn against our signs.
17. 74:17 سَأُرْهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا I will burden him with a punishing ascent.
18. 74:18 إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ Indeed, he reflected and calculated.
19. 74:19 فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ So may he be destroyed for how he calculated.
20. 74:20 ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ Again, may he be destroyed for how he calculated!
21. 74:21 ثُمَّ نَظَرَ Then he looked again,
22. 74:22 ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ Then he frowned and scowled,
23. 74:23 ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَٱسْتَكْبَرَ Then he turned away in arrogance,
24. 74:24 فَقَالَ إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ and said, "This is nothing but sorcery handed down,
25. 74:25 إِنْ هَـٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوْلُ ٱلْبَشَرِ This is nothing but the speech of a mortal."
26. 74:26 سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ I will cast him into saqar.
27. 74:27 وَمَآ أَدْرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ And what will make you understand what saqar is?
28. 74:28 لَا تُبْقِى وَلَا تَذَرُ It spares nothing and leaves nothing behind.
29. 74:29 لَوَّاحَةٌ لِّلْبَشَرِ scorching the skin,
30. 74:30 عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ Over it are nineteen.
31. 74:31 وَمَا جَعَلْنَآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَـٰٓئِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَيَزْدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓا۟ إِيمَـٰنًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُوا۟ ٱلْكِتَـٰبَ وَٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِى قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ وَٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَـٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهْدِى مَن يَشَآءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِىَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ And we have made none but angels the keepers of the fire, and we set their number only as a trial for those who deny — so that those given the scripture may be certain, and those who believe may grow in faith, and those given the scripture and the believers may have no doubt, and so that those with sickness in their hearts, and the deniers, may say, "What does God mean by this comparison?" In this way God leaves astray whom he wills and guides whom he wills. None knows the forces of your Lord but he. And it is nothing but a reminder to humankind.
32. 74:32 كَلَّا وَٱلْقَمَرِ No — by the moon!
33. 74:33 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ By the night as it withdraws,
34. 74:34 وَٱلصُّبْحِ إِذَآ أَسْفَرَ and by the morning when it grows bright,
35. 74:35 إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى ٱلْكُبَرِ Indeed, it is one of the greatest afflictions,
36. 74:36 نَذِيرًا لِّلْبَشَرِ a warning to humankind,
37. 74:37 لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمْ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ to whoever among you wills to go forward or to hold back.
38. 74:38 كُلُّ نَفْسٍۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ Every soul is held in pledge for what it has earned,
39. 74:39 إِلَّآ أَصْحَـٰبَ ٱلْيَمِينِ except the companions of the right,
40. 74:40 فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ in gardens, questioning one another
41. 74:41 عَنِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَ about the guilty:
42. 74:42 مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِى سَقَرَ "What drove you into saqar?"
43. 74:43 قَالُوا۟ لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ They will say, "We were not among those who prayed,
44. 74:44 وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ ٱلْمِسْكِينَ and we did not feed the poor,
45. 74:45 وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلْخَآئِضِينَ and we plunged into idle talk with those who plunged in,
46. 74:46 وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ and we used to deny the day of reckoning,
47. 74:47 حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلْيَقِينُ until the certainty came upon us.
48. 74:48 فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَـٰعَةُ ٱلشَّـٰفِعِينَ So no intercession of any intercessor will benefit them.
49. 74:49 فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ ٱلتَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ What is wrong with them, that they turn away from the reminder,
50. 74:50 كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُّسْتَنفِرَةٌ as if they were startled donkeys
51. 74:51 فَرَّتْ مِن قَسْوَرَةٍۭ fleeing from a lion?
52. 74:52 بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ أَن يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُّنَشَّرَةً No — every one of them wants to be handed scrolls unrolled before him.
53. 74:53 كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةَ No indeed — they have no fear of the hereafter.
54. 74:54 كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذْكِرَةٌ No — indeed, it is a reminder.
55. 74:55 فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ So whoever wills, let them take heed of it.
56. 74:56 وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ ٱلتَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ ٱلْمَغْفِرَةِ Yet they will not take heed unless God wills — he is worthy to be held in awe, and worthy to forgive.
