Chapter 70 of the Qur'an · “The Ascending Stairways” · 44 verses · revealed in Makkah

A questioner asked about a punishment bound to fall
  2. 70:2 لِّلْكَـٰفِرِينَ لَيْسَ لَهُۥ دَافِعٌ upon those who deny — none can turn it away —
  3. 70:3 مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ ذِى ٱلْمَعَارِجِ from God, Lord of the ascending pathways,
The angels and the Spirit ascend to him on a day whose measure is fifty thousand years.
So be patient with a beautiful patience.
They see it as far off,
  7. 70:7 وَنَرَىٰهُ قَرِيبًا but we see it as near.
On the day when the sky will be like molten metal,
  9. 70:9 وَتَكُونُ ٱلْجِبَالُ كَٱلْعِهْنِ and the mountains will be like tufts of wool,
  10. 70:10 وَلَا يَسْـَٔلُ حَمِيمٌ حَمِيمًا and no close friend will ask after a close friend,
  11. 70:11 يُبَصَّرُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ٱلْمُجْرِمُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِى مِنْ عَذَابِ يَوْمِئِذٍۭ بِبَنِيهِ though they will be made to see one another. The guilty one will wish to ransom himself from the punishment of that day with his children,
  12. 70:12 وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَأَخِيهِ and his spouse and his brother,
  13. 70:13 وَفَصِيلَتِهِ ٱلَّتِى تُـْٔوِيهِ and the kin who sheltered him,
  14. 70:14 وَمَن فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا ثُمَّ يُنجِيهِ and everyone on earth — all of them — if only that could save him.
No! It is laza,
  16. 70:16 نَزَّاعَةً لِّلشَّوَىٰ tearing away the scalp,
  17. 70:17 تَدْعُوا۟ مَنْ أَدْبَرَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ calling out to whoever turned his back and walked away,
  18. 70:18 وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَىٰٓ and amassed wealth and hoarded it away.
Indeed, the human being was created restless —
  20. 70:20 إِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلشَّرُّ جَزُوعًا anxious when harm touches him,
  21. 70:21 وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ٱلْخَيْرُ مَنُوعًا and when good touches him, withholding it,
  22. 70:22 إِلَّا ٱلْمُصَلِّينَ except those who pray—
  23. 70:23 ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ دَآئِمُونَ those who are constant in their prayer,
  24. 70:24 وَٱلَّذِينَ فِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ مَّعْلُومٌ and those in whose wealth there is a known right
  25. 70:25 لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِ for the one who asks and the one deprived,
  26. 70:26 وَٱلَّذِينَ يُصَدِّقُونَ بِيَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِ and those who affirm the day of reckoning,
  27. 70:27 وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم مِّنْ عَذَابِ رَبِّهِم مُّشْفِقُونَ and those who stand in awe of their Lord's punishment —
  28. 70:28 إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّهِمْ غَيْرُ مَأْمُونٍ indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not something anyone can feel safe from —
  29. 70:29 وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَـٰفِظُونَ and those who guard their private parts
  30. 70:30 إِلَّا عَلَىٰٓ أَزْوَٰجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَـٰنُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ except with their spouses or those whom their right hands rightfully hold — for in this they are not to be blamed.
  31. 70:31 فَمَنِ ٱبْتَغَىٰ وَرَآءَ ذَٰلِكَ فَأُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْعَادُونَ but whoever seeks beyond that — they are the ones who transgress —
  32. 70:32 وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ لِأَمَـٰنَـٰتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَٰعُونَ and those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenants,
  33. 70:33 وَٱلَّذِينَ هُم بِشَهَـٰدَٰتِهِمْ قَآئِمُونَ and those who stand firm in their testimony,
  34. 70:34 وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَىٰ صَلَاتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُونَ and those who guard their prayer.
Those are the ones who will be honored in gardens.
What is it with those who deny, rushing toward you with necks outstretched,
  37. 70:37 عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ عِزِينَ from the right and from the left, in scattered groups?
Does each one of them hope to be admitted into a garden of bliss?
No! Indeed, we created them from what they know.
So I swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests — indeed, we have the power
  41. 70:41 عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ خَيْرًا مِّنْهُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ to replace them with better than them — and we cannot be outrun.
So leave them to their idle talk and their games until they meet the day they have been promised.
  43. 70:43 يَوْمَ يَخْرُجُونَ مِنَ ٱلْأَجْدَاثِ سِرَاعًا كَأَنَّهُمْ إِلَىٰ نُصُبٍ يُوفِضُونَ the day they rush out of their graves as if hurrying toward a standing idol,
  44. 70:44 خَـٰشِعَةً أَبْصَـٰرُهُمْ تَرْهَقُهُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمُ ٱلَّذِى كَانُوا۟ يُوعَدُونَ their eyes lowered, humiliation covering them. That is the day they were promised.
