Chapter 51 of the Qur'an · “The Winnowing Winds” · 60 verses · revealed in Makkah
51:1 وَٱلذَّٰرِيَـٰتِ ذَرْوًاBy the winds that scatter far and wide,
51:2فَٱلْحَـٰمِلَـٰتِ وِقْرًاand those that bear a heavy load,
51:3فَٱلْجَـٰرِيَـٰتِ يُسْرًاand those that glide with ease,
51:4فَٱلْمُقَسِّمَـٰتِ أَمْرًاand by those that apportion the affair,
51:5إِنَّمَا تُوعَدُونَ لَصَادِقٌWhat you are promised is true,
51:6وَإِنَّ ٱلدِّينَ لَوَٰقِعٌthe reckoning will surely come to pass.
51:7وَٱلسَّمَآءِ ذَاتِ ٱلْحُبُكِBy the sky woven with pathways,
51:8إِنَّكُمْ لَفِى قَوْلٍ مُّخْتَلِفٍindeed, you are at odds in what you say,
51:9يُؤْفَكُ عَنْهُ مَنْ أُفِكَTurned away from it is whoever is deluded.
51:10قُتِلَ ٱلْخَرَّٰصُونَDamned are the peddlers of falsehood,
51:11ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ سَاهُونَthose who are lost in a flood of confusion, heedless,
51:12يَسْـَٔلُونَ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ ٱلدِّينِThey ask, "When is the day of reckoning?"
51:13يَوْمَ هُمْ عَلَى ٱلنَّارِ يُفْتَنُونَthe day they are tormented over the fire,
51:14ذُوقُوا۟ فِتْنَتَكُمْ هَـٰذَا ٱلَّذِى كُنتُم بِهِۦ تَسْتَعْجِلُونَ"Taste your trial. This is what you sought to hasten."
51:15إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍIndeed, those mindful of God will be among gardens and springs.
51:16ءَاخِذِينَ مَآ ءَاتَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُحْسِنِينَreceiving what their Lord has given them. Before that, they were those who did good.
51:17كَانُوا۟ قَلِيلًا مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَthey slept but little of the night,
51:18وَبِٱلْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَand in the hours before dawn they would seek forgiveness,
51:19وَفِىٓ أَمْوَٰلِهِمْ حَقٌّ لِّلسَّآئِلِ وَٱلْمَحْرُومِand in their wealth was a rightful share for the one who asks and the one deprived.
51:20وَفِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ءَايَـٰتٌ لِّلْمُوقِنِينَOn the earth are signs for those of certain faith,
51:21وَفِىٓ أَنفُسِكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تُبْصِرُونَand within yourselves — do you not see?
51:22وَفِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ رِزْقُكُمْ وَمَا تُوعَدُونَAnd in the heaven is your sustenance, and all that you are promised.
51:23فَوَرَبِّ ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَٱلْأَرْضِ إِنَّهُۥ لَحَقٌّ مِّثْلَ مَآ أَنَّكُمْ تَنطِقُونَBy the Lord of the heaven and the earth, it is the truth — as surely as you speak.
51:24هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَHas the story of Ibrahim's honored guests reached you?
51:25إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا ۖ قَالَ سَلَـٰمٌ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَWhen they entered upon him and said, "Peace," he replied, "Peace — a people unknown."
51:26فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰٓ أَهْلِهِۦ فَجَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ سَمِينٍThen he slipped away to his household and brought out a fat calf,
51:27فَقَرَّبَهُۥٓ إِلَيْهِمْ قَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَHe set it before them and said, "Will you not eat?"
51:28فَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً ۖ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ ۖ وَبَشَّرُوهُ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍHe grew apprehensive of them. They said, "Do not be afraid," and they gave him good news of a son who would be gifted with knowledge.
51:29فَأَقْبَلَتِ ٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ فِى صَرَّةٍ فَصَكَّتْ وَجْهَهَا وَقَالَتْ عَجُوزٌ عَقِيمٌThen his wife came forward with a cry, struck her face, and said, "A barren old woman!"
51:30قَالُوا۟ كَذَٰلِكِ قَالَ رَبُّكِ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْحَكِيمُ ٱلْعَلِيمُThey said, "So has your Lord spoken. Indeed, he is the Wise, the All-Knowing."
51:31۞ قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَHe said, "What is your errand, O messengers?"
51:32قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَThey said, "We have been sent to a guilty people,
51:33لِنُرْسِلَ عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن طِينٍto send down upon them stones of clay,
51:34مُّسَوَّمَةً عِندَ رَبِّكَ لِلْمُسْرِفِينَmarked by your Lord for those who exceed all bounds."
51:35فَأَخْرَجْنَا مَن كَانَ فِيهَا مِنَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَSo we brought out those of the believers who were there,
51:36فَمَا وَجَدْنَا فِيهَا غَيْرَ بَيْتٍ مِّنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَBut we found there only one household of those who surrender.
51:37وَتَرَكْنَا فِيهَآ ءَايَةً لِّلَّذِينَ يَخَافُونَ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَلِيمَAnd we left in it a sign for those who fear the painful punishment.
51:38وَفِى مُوسَىٰٓ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَـٰهُ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ بِسُلْطَـٰنٍ مُّبِينٍAnd in Musa too there is a sign, when we sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
51:39فَتَوَلَّىٰ بِرُكْنِهِۦ وَقَالَ سَـٰحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌBut he turned away with his forces and said, "A sorcerer, or a madman."
51:40فَأَخَذْنَـٰهُ وَجُنُودَهُۥ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُمْ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌSo we seized him and his armies and cast them into the sea — he was the one to blame.
51:41وَفِى عَادٍ إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلرِّيحَ ٱلْعَقِيمَAnd in ʿAad there is a sign — when we sent against them the barren wind
51:42مَا تَذَرُ مِن شَىْءٍ أَتَتْ عَلَيْهِ إِلَّا جَعَلَتْهُ كَٱلرَّمِيمِIt left nothing it passed over without reducing it to crumbling ruin.
51:43وَفِى ثَمُودَ إِذْ قِيلَ لَهُمْ تَمَتَّعُوا۟ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍAnd in Thamud — when they were told, "Enjoy yourselves for a while."
51:44فَعَتَوْا۟ عَنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّـٰعِقَةُ وَهُمْ يَنظُرُونَBut they defied the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them as they looked on.
51:45فَمَا ٱسْتَطَـٰعُوا۟ مِن قِيَامٍ وَمَا كَانُوا۟ مُنتَصِرِينَThey could not rise, nor could they defend themselves.
51:46وَقَوْمَ نُوحٍ مِّن قَبْلُ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَوْمًا فَـٰسِقِينَAnd the people of Nuh before — they were a people who transgressed.
51:47وَٱلسَّمَآءَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا بِأَيْي۟دٍ وَإِنَّا لَمُوسِعُونَAnd the heaven — we built it with strength, and indeed we are its expander.
51:48وَٱلْأَرْضَ فَرَشْنَـٰهَا فَنِعْمَ ٱلْمَـٰهِدُونَAnd the earth — we spread it out; how excellent are those who lay it forth.
51:49وَمِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقْنَا زَوْجَيْنِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَذَكَّرُونَAnd of everything we created pairs, so that you might reflect.
51:50فَفِرُّوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌSo flee to God. Indeed, I am a clear warner to you from him.
51:51وَلَا تَجْعَلُوا۟ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۖ إِنِّى لَكُم مِّنْهُ نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌAnd do not set up another god alongside God. I am a clear warner to you from him.
51:52كَذَٰلِكَ مَآ أَتَى ٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا قَالُوا۟ سَاحِرٌ أَوْ مَجْنُونٌSo it was: no messenger came to those before them without their saying, "A sorcerer, or a madman."
51:53أَتَوَاصَوْا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَDid they pass this down to one another? No — they are a people who transgress all bounds.
51:54فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ فَمَآ أَنتَ بِمَلُومٍSo turn away from them — you are not to blame.
51:55وَذَكِّرْ فَإِنَّ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ تَنفَعُ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَAnd remind, for the reminder benefits those who believe.
51:56وَمَا خَلَقْتُ ٱلْجِنَّ وَٱلْإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعْبُدُونِI created jinn and humankind only that they might worship me.
51:57مَآ أُرِيدُ مِنْهُم مِّن رِّزْقٍ وَمَآ أُرِيدُ أَن يُطْعِمُونِI want no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed me.
51:58إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُIndeed, God is the Provider, the Lord of power, the firm and unshakable.
51:59فَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ذَنُوبًا مِّثْلَ ذَنُوبِ أَصْحَـٰبِهِمْ فَلَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونِIndeed, those who do wrong will have their share of punishment, like the share of their companions before them — so let them not press me to hasten it.
51:60فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ مِن يَوْمِهِمُ ٱلَّذِى يُوعَدُونَSo woe to those who deny the truth, from the day they are promised.
