Chapter 50 of the Qur'an · “The Letter "Qaf"” · 45 verses · revealed in Makkah
50:1 قٓ ۚ وَٱلْقُرْءَانِ ٱلْمَجِيدِQaf. By the glorious Qur'an.
50:2بَلْ عَجِبُوٓا۟ أَن جَآءَهُم مُّنذِرٌ مِّنْهُمْ فَقَالَ ٱلْكَـٰفِرُونَ هَـٰذَا شَىْءٌ عَجِيبٌBut they were astonished that a warner had come to them from among themselves, and those who deny said, "This is a strange thing.
50:3أَءِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا ۖ ذَٰلِكَ رَجْعٌۢ بَعِيدٌ"When we have died and become dust? That is a far-fetched return."
50:4قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنقُصُ ٱلْأَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَعِندَنَا كِتَـٰبٌ حَفِيظٌۢWe know what the earth takes away from them, and with us is a book that preserves all.
50:5بَلْ كَذَّبُوا۟ بِٱلْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ فَهُمْ فِىٓ أَمْرٍ مَّرِيجٍNo — they denied the truth when it came to them, so they are in a state of confusion.
50:6أَفَلَمْ يَنظُرُوٓا۟ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَوْقَهُمْ كَيْفَ بَنَيْنَـٰهَا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِن فُرُوجٍHave they not looked at the sky above them — how we built it and adorned it, with no cracks in it?
50:7وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوْجٍۭ بَهِيجٍAnd the earth — we spread it out, set firm mountains upon it, and caused every kind of delightful pair to grow there,
50:8تَبْصِرَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُّنِيبٍas insight and a reminder for every servant who turns back to God.
50:9وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً مُّبَـٰرَكًا فَأَنۢبَتْنَا بِهِۦ جَنَّـٰتٍ وَحَبَّ ٱلْحَصِيدِAnd we sent down blessed water from the sky, and with it brought forth gardens and the grain of harvest,
50:10وَٱلنَّخْلَ بَاسِقَـٰتٍ لَّهَا طَلْعٌ نَّضِيدٌand the towering date-palms with their tiered clusters,
50:11رِّزْقًا لِّلْعِبَادِ ۖ وَأَحْيَيْنَا بِهِۦ بَلْدَةً مَّيْتًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلْخُرُوجُas provision for the servants; and with it we bring a dead land back to life. Such is the emergence.
50:12كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلرَّسِّ وَثَمُودُBefore them, the people of Nuh denied the truth, as did the people of al-Rass and Thamud,
50:13وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ وَإِخْوَٰنُ لُوطٍand ʿAd, and Pharaoh, and the brethren of Lut,
50:14وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ وَقَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ ۚ كُلٌّ كَذَّبَ ٱلرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِand the people of the thicket, and the people of Tubba — all of them denied the messengers, so my warning came true.
50:15أَفَعَيِينَا بِٱلْخَلْقِ ٱلْأَوَّلِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِى لَبْسٍ مِّنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍWere we then wearied by the first creation? Yet they are in doubt about a new creation.
50:16وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِهِۦ نَفْسُهُۥ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ ٱلْوَرِيدِIndeed, we created the human being, and we know what his lower self whispers to him — and we are closer to him than his jugular vein.
50:17إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى ٱلْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ ٱلْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ ٱلشِّمَالِ قَعِيدٌAs the two recorders record, one seated on the right and one on the left,
50:18مَّا يَلْفِظُ مِن قَوْلٍ إِلَّا لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيدٌNo word does he utter without a vigilant watcher beside him, ready.
50:19وَجَآءَتْ سَكْرَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ مَا كُنتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُAnd the stupor of death comes bearing the truth: this is what you were trying to evade.
50:20وَنُفِخَ فِى ٱلصُّورِ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْوَعِيدِAnd the trumpet is blown. This is the day of the warning fulfilled.
50:21وَجَآءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّعَهَا سَآئِقٌ وَشَهِيدٌAnd every soul will come forward, with it a driver and a witness.
50:22لَّقَدْ كُنتَ فِى غَفْلَةٍ مِّنْ هَـٰذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنكَ غِطَآءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ ٱلْيَوْمَ حَدِيدٌ"You were heedless of this, and now we have lifted your veil, so your sight today is sharp."
50:23وَقَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ هَـٰذَا مَا لَدَىَّ عَتِيدٌAnd his companion will say, "This is what I have ready."
50:24أَلْقِيَا فِى جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٍCast into jahannam every stubborn rejecter,
50:25مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ مُّرِيبٍwho withheld good, transgressed, and sowed doubt,
50:26ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ فَأَلْقِيَاهُ فِى ٱلْعَذَابِ ٱلشَّدِيدِwho set up another god alongside God — cast him into the severe punishment.
50:27۞ قَالَ قَرِينُهُۥ رَبَّنَا مَآ أَطْغَيْتُهُۥ وَلَـٰكِن كَانَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۭ بَعِيدٍHis companion will say, "Our Lord, I did not drive him to transgress — he was already far astray."
50:28قَالَ لَا تَخْتَصِمُوا۟ لَدَىَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُم بِٱلْوَعِيدِGod will say, "Do not quarrel in my presence — I had already sent you the warning.
50:29مَا يُبَدَّلُ ٱلْقَوْلُ لَدَىَّ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ بِظَلَّـٰمٍ لِّلْعَبِيدِThe word with me does not change, and I am never unjust to my servants.'
50:30يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلِ ٱمْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِن مَّزِيدٍOn the day we say to jahannam, "Are you full?" and it answers, "Is there more?"
50:31وَأُزْلِفَتِ ٱلْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ غَيْرَ بَعِيدٍAnd the garden will be brought near to the God-conscious, no longer far away.
50:32هَـٰذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظٍThis is what you were promised — for everyone who turned back to God and kept watch,
50:33مَّنْ خَشِىَ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنَ بِٱلْغَيْبِ وَجَآءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُّنِيبٍwhoever stood in awe of the Most Merciful unseen and came with a heart turned back to him.
50:34ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُلُودِEnter it in peace. This is the day of eternity.
50:35لَهُم مَّا يَشَآءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌThere they will have whatever they wish, and with us there is yet more.
50:36وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُم مِّن قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُم بَطْشًا فَنَقَّبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ هَلْ مِن مَّحِيصٍHow many generations we destroyed before them — mightier than these in force, who roamed through the lands. Was there any escape?
50:37إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَذِكْرَىٰ لِمَن كَانَ لَهُۥ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى ٱلسَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيدٌIn that is surely a reminder for anyone who has a heart, or who listens attentively and is present.
50:38وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِى سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِن لُّغُوبٍAnd we created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them in six days, and no weariness touched us.
50:39فَٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ ٱلشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ ٱلْغُرُوبِSo bear patiently what they say, and glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before its setting,
50:40وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَأَدْبَـٰرَ ٱلسُّجُودِAnd in part of the night glorify him, and after the prostrations.
50:41وَٱسْتَمِعْ يَوْمَ يُنَادِ ٱلْمُنَادِ مِن مَّكَانٍ قَرِيبٍAnd listen for the day when the caller will call from a place near at hand —
50:42يَوْمَ يَسْمَعُونَ ٱلصَّيْحَةَ بِٱلْحَقِّ ۚ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ ٱلْخُرُوجِThe day they hear the cry in truth — that is the day of coming forth.
50:43إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْنَا ٱلْمَصِيرُIndeed, we give life and we give death, and to us is the final return.
50:44يَوْمَ تَشَقَّقُ ٱلْأَرْضُ عَنْهُمْ سِرَاعًا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ حَشْرٌ عَلَيْنَا يَسِيرٌOn the day the earth splits open and they rush forth — that is a gathering easy for us.
50:45نَّحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيْهِم بِجَبَّارٍ ۖ فَذَكِّرْ بِٱلْقُرْءَانِ مَن يَخَافُ وَعِيدِWe know well what they say, and you are not there to compel them. So remind, through the Qur'an, whoever fears my warning.
