Chapter 36 of the Qur'an · “Ya Sin” · 83 verses · revealed in Makkah

Ya Sin.
By the wise Qur'an,
  3. 36:3 إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ you are truly one of the messengers,
  4. 36:4 عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ on a straight path,
  5. 36:5 تَنزِيلَ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ a revelation from the Almighty, the Most Merciful,
  6. 36:6 لِتُنذِرَ قَوْمًا مَّآ أُنذِرَ ءَابَآؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَـٰفِلُونَ to warn a people whose forefathers were not warned, so they remain unaware.
The word has come true against most of them, for they will not believe.
Indeed, we have placed shackles on their necks reaching to their chins, so their heads are forced upward.
And we have placed a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and covered them over, so they cannot see.
It makes no difference to them whether you warn them or not — they will not believe.
You can only warn the one who follows the reminder and stands in awe of the Most Merciful unseen. So give him good news of forgiveness and a noble reward.
Indeed, we are the ones who give life to the dead, and we record what they have sent ahead and the traces they leave behind. We have accounted for everything in a clear register.
Set forth for them a parable: the people of the town, when the messengers came to them.
When we sent them two messengers, they rejected both, so we reinforced them with a third, and they said, "We have truly been sent to you."
They said, "You are nothing but human beings like us. The Most Merciful has sent down nothing. You are only lying."
They said, "Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you,
And nothing rests on us but to deliver the message clearly."
They said, "We see you as a bad omen. If you do not stop, we will surely stone you, and a painful punishment from us will reach you."
They said, "Your ill omen is with yourselves. Is it because you have been reminded? No — you are a people who transgress all bounds."
Then from the farthest part of the city a man came running. He said, "My people, follow the messengers.
Follow those who ask no reward of you and are rightly guided.
And why should I not worship the one who originated me, and to whom you will all be returned?
Shall I take other gods besides him? If the Most Merciful intends harm for me, their intercession will avail me nothing, nor can they rescue me.
Then I would surely be in clear error.
Indeed, I have believed in your Lord, so listen to me.
It was said, "Enter the garden." He said, "If only my people knew
  27. 36:27 بِمَا غَفَرَ لِى رَبِّى وَجَعَلَنِى مِنَ ٱلْمُكْرَمِينَ how my Lord has forgiven me and placed me among the honored.
And we sent down no host from the sky against his people after him, nor were we about to send one.
It was only a single cry, and at once they were extinguished.
What sorrow for these servants! No messenger ever came to them without their mocking him.
Have they not seen how many generations we destroyed before them — that none of them return?
And all of them, without exception, will be brought before us.
And a sign for them is the dead earth: we brought it to life and brought forth from it grain, and from it they eat.
And we placed in it gardens of date palms and grapevines, and caused springs to gush forth within it,
  35. 36:35 لِيَأْكُلُوا۟ مِن ثَمَرِهِۦ وَمَا عَمِلَتْهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۖ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ so they may eat of its fruit, though their hands did not make it. Will they not then give thanks?
Glory be to the one who created all pairs — of what the earth brings forth, of themselves, and of what they do not know.
Another sign for them is the night: we strip the day from it, and they are plunged into darkness.
And the sun runs its course to a resting place appointed for it. That is the decree of the Mighty, the All-Knowing.
And for the moon, we have ordained phases, until it returns like an old withered date-stalk.
The sun is not permitted to overtake the moon, nor does the night outrun the day — each glides in its own orbit.
And a sign for them is that we carried their offspring in the laden ship,
And we created for them other vessels like it that they ride.
And if we willed, we would drown them — no one to answer their cry, and no rescue for them
  44. 36:44 إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِّنَّا وَمَتَـٰعًا إِلَىٰ حِينٍ except as a mercy from us and enjoyment for a time.
And when they are told, "Beware of what lies before you and what lies behind you, so that you may receive mercy," they turn away.
And no sign of their Lord's signs comes to them but they turn away from it.
And when they are told, "Give from what God has provided for you," those who deny say to those who believe, "Should we feed someone whom God, had he willed, would have fed himself? You are clearly lost in error."
And they say, "When will this promise come, if you are telling the truth?"
They are waiting for nothing but a single blast that will seize them while they are still arguing.
They will not be able to make a bequest, nor return to their families.
And the trumpet is blown, and at once they pour forth from their graves to their Lord.
They will say, "Woe to us! Who has raised us from our resting place?" This is what the Most Merciful promised, and the messengers spoke the truth.
It will be but a single blast, and at once they are all brought before us.
Today no soul will be wronged in the least, and you will be repaid for nothing but what you used to do.
Indeed, the companions of the garden this day are joyfully occupied,
  56. 36:56 هُمْ وَأَزْوَٰجُهُمْ فِى ظِلَـٰلٍ عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ مُتَّكِـُٔونَ they and their spouses, in shade, reclining on couches.
There they have fruit, and they have whatever they call for.
Peace" — a word from a Merciful Lord.
But stand apart today, you guilty ones.
Did I not charge you, children of Adam, not to worship Satan — he is a clear enemy to you —
  61. 36:61 وَأَنِ ٱعْبُدُونِى ۚ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ مُّسْتَقِيمٌ and that you worship me alone? This is the straight path.
And he has led great numbers of you astray. Did you not use your reason?
This is the jahannam you were promised.
Burn in it today for what you used to deny.
On that day we will seal their mouths, and their hands will speak to us, and their feet will bear witness to what they used to earn.
Had we willed, we could have blotted out their eyes, and they would have rushed for the path — but how could they see?
And had we willed, we could have transformed them where they stood, so they could neither go forward nor turn back.
And whoever we grant long life, we reverse in creation. Will they not then understand?
We did not teach him poetry, nor would it suit him. This is only a reminder and a clear recitation,
  70. 36:70 لِّيُنذِرَ مَن كَانَ حَيًّا وَيَحِقَّ ٱلْقَوْلُ عَلَى ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ to warn whoever is alive, and so the word is justly fulfilled against those who deny.
Do they not see that we have created for them, from what our hands have made, livestock they own?
And we made them tame for them, so some they ride and some they eat,
And in them are benefits for them, and drink. Will they not then be grateful?
Yet they have taken other gods besides God, hoping to be helped.
They cannot help them, yet they stand as an army at their service.
So do not let their words grieve you. Indeed, we know what they conceal and what they declare.
Does the human being not see that we created him from a drop of fluid? Yet there he is, an open adversary.
He puts forth an argument against us and forgets his own creation. He asks, "Who will give life to bones once they have crumbled to dust?"
Say, "The one who brought them into being the first time will give them life again, and he knows every act of creation.
  80. 36:80 ٱلَّذِى جَعَلَ لَكُم مِّنَ ٱلشَّجَرِ ٱلْأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَآ أَنتُم مِّنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ the one who made fire for you from the green tree — and from it you kindle your own.
Is the one who created the heavens and the earth not able to create their like? Yes indeed — and he is the All-Knowing Creator.
  82. 36:82 إِنَّمَآ أَمْرُهُۥٓ إِذَآ أَرَادَ شَيْـًٔا أَن يَقُولَ لَهُۥ كُن فَيَكُونُ indeed, when he wills a thing, his command is only to say to it, "Be," and it is.
So glory be to the one in whose hand is the dominion of all things, and to him you will be returned.
