Chapter 20 of the Qur'an · “Ta-Ha” · 135 verses · revealed in Makkah

We did not send down the Qur'an to you to cause you distress,
  3. 20:3 إِلَّا تَذْكِرَةً لِّمَن يَخْشَىٰ only as a reminder for those who stand in awe,
  4. 20:4 تَنزِيلًا مِّمَّنْ خَلَقَ ٱلْأَرْضَ وَٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ ٱلْعُلَى a revelation from the one who created the earth and the high heavens,
  5. 20:5 ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ عَلَى ٱلْعَرْشِ ٱسْتَوَىٰ the Most Merciful, established upon the throne.
To him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, all that is between them, and all that lies beneath the soil.
And if you speak aloud — indeed, he knows the secret and what is more hidden still.
God — there is no god but he — to him belong the most beautiful names.
And has the story of Musa come to you?
When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here — I have glimpsed a fire. Perhaps I can bring you a burning brand from it, or find some guidance there."
And when he reached it, a voice called out: "Musa!
Indeed, I am your Lord, so take off your sandals — you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa.
And I have chosen you, so listen to what is being revealed.
I am God — there is no god but me — so worship me and establish the prayer to remember me.
The hour is surely coming — I keep it hidden — so that every soul may be repaid for what it strives toward.
So do not let anyone turn you away from it — anyone who does not believe in it and follows his own desire — or you will perish.
And what is that in your right hand, Musa?
He said, "It is my staff. I lean on it, and I beat down leaves with it for my sheep, and I have other uses for it."
God said, "Throw it down, Musa."
So he threw it down, and at once it was a snake, moving swiftly.
God said, "Take hold of it and do not fear. We will return it to its former state.
And draw your hand close to your side — it will come out white, unblemished — another sign,
  23. 20:23 لِنُرِيَكَ مِنْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا ٱلْكُبْرَى so that we may show you some of our greatest signs.
Go to Pharaoh — he has transgressed all bounds.
He said, "My Lord, open up my heart for me,
  26. 20:26 وَيَسِّرْ لِىٓ أَمْرِى and make my task easy for me,
  27. 20:27 وَٱحْلُلْ عُقْدَةً مِّن لِّسَانِى and loosen the knot from my tongue,
  28. 20:28 يَفْقَهُوا۟ قَوْلِى so they may understand my speech,
  29. 20:29 وَٱجْعَل لِّى وَزِيرًا مِّنْ أَهْلِى and appoint for me a helper from my family,
Harun, my brother.
  31. 20:31 ٱشْدُدْ بِهِۦٓ أَزْرِى strengthen me through him,
  32. 20:32 وَأَشْرِكْهُ فِىٓ أَمْرِى and let him share in my task,
  33. 20:33 كَىْ نُسَبِّحَكَ كَثِيرًا so that we may glorify you much,
  34. 20:34 وَنَذْكُرَكَ كَثِيرًا and remember you often.
Indeed, you have always seen us clearly.
God said, "Your request is granted, Musa.
And indeed, we had already shown you favor another time,
  38. 20:38 إِذْ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمِّكَ مَا يُوحَىٰٓ when we inspired your mother with what was inspired:
  39. 20:39 أَنِ ٱقْذِفِيهِ فِى ٱلتَّابُوتِ فَٱقْذِفِيهِ فِى ٱلْيَمِّ فَلْيُلْقِهِ ٱلْيَمُّ بِٱلسَّاحِلِ يَأْخُذْهُ عَدُوٌّ لِّى وَعَدُوٌّ لَّهُۥ ۚ وَأَلْقَيْتُ عَلَيْكَ مَحَبَّةً مِّنِّى وَلِتُصْنَعَ عَلَىٰ عَيْنِىٓ 'Place him in the chest, and cast the chest into the river, and the river will deliver him to the shore, where an enemy of mine and his will take him up.' And I cast over you a love from me, so that you would be raised under my eye.
Your sister went and said, 'Shall I point you to someone who will care for him?' So we returned you to your mother, that her eyes might find comfort and she would not grieve. And you killed a soul, and we delivered you from anguish, and we tested you with trial after trial. Then you stayed for years among the people of Madyan, and now you have come, Musa, at the appointed time.
And I have chosen you for myself.
Go, you and your brother, with my signs, and do not falter in remembering me.
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh — he has overstepped all bounds.
Speak to him gently, so that he may take heed or come to fear.
They said, "Our Lord, we fear he will lash out against us or overstep all bounds."
God said, "Do not be afraid. I am with you both — I hear and I see."
So go to him and say: 'We are two messengers of your Lord. Send the Children of Israel with us, and do not torment them. We have come to you with a sign from your Lord. And peace be upon whoever follows the guidance.'
It has been revealed to us that the punishment falls upon whoever denies and turns away.'
He said, "And who is the Lord of you two, O Musa?"
He said, "Our Lord is the one who gave each thing its form, then guided it."
Pharaoh said, "Then what of the generations of old?"
He said, "Knowledge of them is with my Lord, in a record. My Lord neither errs nor forgets."
The one who made the earth a cradle for you, traced pathways for you through it, and sent down water from the sky — and with it we brought forth pairs of diverse plants.
Eat, and pasture your livestock. In this are signs for those endowed with reason.
From the earth we created you, and into it we will return you, and from it we will bring you forth once again.
And we showed him all our signs, but he denied them and refused.
He said, "Have you come to drive us out of our land with your sorcery, Musa?
Then we will surely bring you magic to match it. So set a meeting between us and you that neither we nor you will break — at a fair and open place.
Musa said, "Your appointed time is the day of the festival, and let the people be gathered in the late morning."
So Pharaoh withdrew, gathered his scheme, and then came back.
Musa said to them, "Woe to you! Do not invent lies against God, or he will wipe you out with a punishment. Whoever invents lies has failed."
So they disputed their affair among themselves and kept their counsel secret.
They said, "These two are surely sorcerers who mean to drive you out of your land by their sorcery and do away with your exemplary way of life.
So unite your scheme, then come forward in ranks. Whoever prevails today has truly succeeded.
They said, "Musa, either you throw, or we will be the first to throw."
He said, "No, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs, through their sorcery, seemed to him to be moving.
And Musa felt a fear stir within himself.
We said, "Do not be afraid. You will prevail.
Throw down what is in your right hand — it will swallow up what they have made. What they have made is only a sorcerer's trick, and the sorcerer does not succeed, wherever he turns.
Then the magicians fell down in prostration, saying, "We believe in the Lord of Harun and Musa."
Pharaoh said, "You believed in him before I gave you permission? He must be your chief, the one who taught you magic. I will cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will know which of us inflicts the harsher and more lasting punishment."
They said, "We will never prefer you over the clear proofs that have come to us, nor over the one who created us. So decree whatever you will decree — you can only decree in this worldly life.
Indeed, we have believed in our Lord, that he may forgive us our sins and the sorcery you compelled us to perform. God is better and more lasting.
Whoever comes to his Lord as a guilty offender, for him is jahannam — where he neither dies nor lives.
But whoever comes to him as a believer, having done righteous deeds — for them are the highest ranks:
Gardens of lasting bliss, with rivers flowing beneath, where they will remain forever. That is the reward of those who purify themselves.
And we revealed to Musa: "Set out by night with my servants, and strike for them a dry path through the sea — fearing no pursuit, and unafraid."
Then Pharaoh pursued them with his armies, and the sea engulfed them — utterly engulfed them.
Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide them.
Children of Israel, we delivered you from your enemy, and we made an appointment with you on the right side of the mount, and we sent down to you manna and quails,
Eat from the good things we have provided for you, and do not transgress in this, or my anger will fall upon you — and whoever my anger falls upon has truly perished.
And indeed, I am ever-forgiving to whoever repents, believes, does righteous deeds, and then stays on the path of guidance.
And what made you hasten ahead of your people, Musa?
He said, "They are right behind me on my trail, and I hurried to you, my Lord, so that you would be pleased."
God said, "We have tested your people in your absence, and the Samiri has led them astray."
So Musa returned to his people, angry and grieved. He said, 'My people, did your Lord not make you a beautiful promise? Did the covenant feel too long to you, or did you want wrath from your Lord to fall upon you, so you broke your appointment with me?'
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our own choice, but we were made to carry the weight of the people's ornaments, so we cast them off — and that is what the Samiri threw in too."
Then he brought out for them a calf — a body that lowed — and they said, "This is your god and the god of Musa, but he has forgotten."
Did they not see that it returned them no word, and held no power to harm them or benefit them?
Harun had already told them, before all this, "My people, you are only being tested by it. Your Lord is truly the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my command."
They said, "We will not cease our devotion to it until Musa returns to us."
Musa said, "Harun, what held you back when you saw them going astray —
  93. 20:93 أَلَّا تَتَّبِعَنِ ۖ أَفَعَصَيْتَ أَمْرِى from following me? Did you then disobey my command?
Harun said, "Son of my mother, do not seize me by my beard or my head. I feared you would say: you have caused division among the Children of Israel and did not heed my word."
Musa said, "And what is your case, Samiri?"
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful from the track of the messenger and cast it in. That is how my lower self made it seem fair to me."
Musa said, "Then go. In this life your lot is to say, 'Do not touch me,' and there is an appointment for you that you cannot escape. Now look at your god, the one you stayed devoted to — we will burn it and scatter its dust into the sea."
Your god is only God — there is no god but he; his knowledge encompasses all things.
In this way we relate to you accounts of what has gone before, and we have given you, from our presence, a reminder.
Whoever turns away from it will carry a burden on the day of resurrection,
  101. 20:101 خَـٰلِدِينَ فِيهِ ۖ وَسَآءَ لَهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ حِمْلًا remaining under it forever — an evil burden for them on the day of resurrection,
On the day the trumpet is blown, we will gather the guilty, their eyes glazed blue with terror,
  103. 20:103 يَتَخَـٰفَتُونَ بَيْنَهُمْ إِن لَّبِثْتُمْ إِلَّا عَشْرًا whispering among themselves, "You stayed only ten days."
We know best what they say, when the most discerning among them will say, "You stayed only a day."
And they ask you about the mountains. Say: my Lord will scatter them as dust.
  106. 20:106 فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعًا صَفْصَفًا leaving them a level plain,
  107. 20:107 لَّا تَرَىٰ فِيهَا عِوَجًا وَلَآ أَمْتًا you will see in it no curve or rise.
On that day they will follow the caller, from whom there is no turning aside, and voices will be hushed before the Most Merciful, so you will hear nothing but a faint whisper.
On that day, no intercession will help except from one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and whose word he has accepted.
He knows what lies before them and what lies behind them, while they cannot encompass him in knowledge.
And faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Whoever carries the weight of wrongdoing will have failed.
But whoever does righteous deeds as a believer will fear neither injustice nor any loss of their due.
And so we have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an, and laid out within it warnings of every kind, so that they may be mindful, or that it may stir in them remembrance.
Exalted is God, the True Sovereign. Do not rush ahead with the Qur'an before its revelation to you is complete, and say, 'My Lord, increase me in knowledge.'
And we had made a covenant with Adam before, but he forgot, and we found in him no firm resolve.
And when we said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," they prostrated — all except Iblis; he refused.
So we said, "Adam, this one is an enemy to you and to your wife. Do not let him drive you both out of the garden, or you will suffer.
Indeed, it is yours here never to hunger nor to be naked,
  119. 20:119 وَأَنَّكَ لَا تَظْمَؤُا۟ فِيهَا وَلَا تَضْحَىٰ and there you will not thirst, nor suffer the sun's heat.
But Satan whispered to him, saying, "Adam, shall I lead you to the tree of immortality and to a kingdom that never fades?"
So they both ate from it, and their private parts became exposed to them, and they began to cover themselves with leaves from the garden. Adam disobeyed his Lord and went astray.
Then his Lord chose him, turned to him in mercy, and guided him.
God said, "Go down from it, both of you together, some of you enemies to others. When guidance comes to you from me, whoever follows my guidance will not stray, nor will they fall into misery.
But whoever turns away from my remembrance will have a constricted life, and we will gather him blind on the day of resurrection.
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind, when I once could see?"
God will say, "Just so — our signs came to you, and you forgot them; and just so, today you are forgotten."
And so we recompense whoever goes to excess and does not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the hereafter is harsher and more lasting.
Is it not a guide for them — how many generations we destroyed before them, through whose dwellings they now walk? In that are signs for those who possess understanding.
Were it not for a word that had already gone forth from your Lord, and a term appointed, the judgment would have been inescapable.
So be patient with what they say, and glorify your Lord with praise before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and glorify him through the hours of the night and at the ends of the day, that you may find contentment.
And do not strain your eyes toward what we have given certain groups among them to enjoy — the bloom of this worldly life — by which we test them. The provision of your Lord is better and more lasting.
And command your family to pray, and be steadfast in it. We ask no provision of you; we provide for you. And the best outcome belongs to mindfulness of God.
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them clear proof of what is in the earlier scriptures?
Had we destroyed them with a punishment before this, they would have said, 'Our Lord, if only you had sent us a messenger, we would have followed your signs before we were humbled and disgraced.'
Say, "Each one is waiting, so wait. You will come to know who walks the even path and who is guided."
