Chapter 15 of the Qur'an · “The Rocky Tract” · 99 verses · revealed in Makkah
15:1 الٓر ۚ تِلْكَ ءَايَـٰتُ ٱلْكِتَـٰبِ وَقُرْءَانٍ مُّبِينٍAlif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book — a Qur'an that makes all things clear.
15:2رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ لَوْ كَانُوا۟ مُسْلِمِينَPerhaps those who denied will wish they had been among those who surrender.
15:3ذَرْهُمْ يَأْكُلُوا۟ وَيَتَمَتَّعُوا۟ وَيُلْهِهِمُ ٱلْأَمَلُ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَLeave them to eat and enjoy themselves, distracted by hope — they will come to know.
15:4وَمَآ أَهْلَكْنَا مِن قَرْيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٌ مَّعْلُومٌNever have we destroyed a town except that it had a known decree.
15:5مَّا تَسْبِقُ مِنْ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسْتَـْٔخِرُونَNo community can outrun its appointed time, nor can they delay it.
15:6وَقَالُوا۟ يَـٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ ٱلذِّكْرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌAnd they say, "You upon whom the reminder has been sent down — you are surely mad.
15:7لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّـٰدِقِينَWhy do you not bring the angels to us, if you are truthful?
15:8مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَwe do not send down the angels except with the truth, and then they would be granted no reprieve.
15:9إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا ٱلذِّكْرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَـٰفِظُونَIndeed, we ourselves sent down the reminder, and we ourselves are its guardian.
15:10وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِن قَبْلِكَ فِى شِيَعِ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَAnd we sent messengers before you among the factions of those who came before.
15:11وَمَا يَأْتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا۟ بِهِۦ يَسْتَهْزِءُونَand no messenger came to them without their mocking him.
15:12كَذَٰلِكَ نَسْلُكُهُۥ فِى قُلُوبِ ٱلْمُجْرِمِينَIn this way we let it pass through the hearts of the guilty.
15:13لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِهِۦ ۖ وَقَدْ خَلَتْ سُنَّةُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَThey will not believe in it, though the pattern of those before them has already run its course.
15:14وَلَوْ فَتَحْنَا عَلَيْهِم بَابًا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّوا۟ فِيهِ يَعْرُجُونَEven if we opened for them a gate in the sky and they kept ascending through it,
15:15لَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتْ أَبْصَـٰرُنَا بَلْ نَحْنُ قَوْمٌ مَّسْحُورُونَthey would still say, "Our eyes have only been dazzled — no, we are a people under a spell."
15:16وَلَقَدْ جَعَلْنَا فِى ٱلسَّمَآءِ بُرُوجًا وَزَيَّنَّـٰهَا لِلنَّـٰظِرِينَAnd we have set constellations in the sky and made it beautiful for those who behold it,
15:17وَحَفِظْنَـٰهَا مِن كُلِّ شَيْطَـٰنٍ رَّجِيمٍand we have guarded it from every outcast devil,
15:18إِلَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَرَقَ ٱلسَّمْعَ فَأَتْبَعَهُۥ شِهَابٌ مُّبِينٌexcept for any who steals a hearing — then a clear flame pursues him.
15:19وَٱلْأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَـٰهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَٰسِىَ وَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ شَىْءٍ مَّوْزُونٍAnd the earth — we spread it out, set firm mountains upon it, and caused every well-measured thing to grow on it.
15:20وَجَعَلْنَا لَكُمْ فِيهَا مَعَـٰيِشَ وَمَن لَّسْتُمْ لَهُۥ بِرَٰزِقِينَAnd we have placed in it means of living for you, and for those whom you do not provide for.
15:21وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍ مَّعْلُومٍThere is nothing whose storehouses are not with us, and we send it down only in a known measure.
15:22وَأَرْسَلْنَا ٱلرِّيَـٰحَ لَوَٰقِحَ فَأَنزَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءً فَأَسْقَيْنَـٰكُمُوهُ وَمَآ أَنتُمْ لَهُۥ بِخَـٰزِنِينَAnd we send the fertilizing winds, and we send down water from the sky and give it to you to drink — you are not the keepers of its stores.
15:23وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ نُحْىِۦ وَنُمِيتُ وَنَحْنُ ٱلْوَٰرِثُونَAnd indeed, we are the ones who give life and bring death, and we are the inheritors.
15:24وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَقْدِمِينَ مِنكُمْ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْنَا ٱلْمُسْتَـْٔخِرِينَAnd we surely know those of you who go ahead, and we surely know those who lag behind.
15:25وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌAnd indeed, your Lord will gather them together. He is all-wise, all-knowing.
15:26وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍAnd we created the human being from dried clay, from dark mud shaped into form.
15:27وَٱلْجَآنَّ خَلَقْنَـٰهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ ٱلسَّمُومِAnd the jinn we created before, from scorching fire.
15:28وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةِ إِنِّى خَـٰلِقٌۢ بَشَرًا مِّن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍAnd when your Lord said to the angels, "I am about to create a human being from ringing clay, from dark mud molded into shape.
15:29فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُۥ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى فَقَعُوا۟ لَهُۥ سَـٰجِدِينَSo when I have shaped him and breathed into him of my spirit, fall down before him in prostration.
15:30فَسَجَدَ ٱلْمَلَـٰٓئِكَةُ كُلُّهُمْ أَجْمَعُونَSo the angels prostrated, all of them together,
15:31إِلَّآ إِبْلِيسَ أَبَىٰٓ أَن يَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَexcept Iblis — he refused to be among those who prostrated.
15:32قَالَ يَـٰٓإِبْلِيسُ مَا لَكَ أَلَّا تَكُونَ مَعَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَGod said, "Iblis, what is it with you that you are not among those who prostrate?"
15:33قَالَ لَمْ أَكُن لِّأَسْجُدَ لِبَشَرٍ خَلَقْتَهُۥ مِن صَلْصَـٰلٍ مِّنْ حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُونٍHe said, "I will not prostrate to a mortal you created from clay drawn from dark, molded mud."
15:34قَالَ فَٱخْرُجْ مِنْهَا فَإِنَّكَ رَجِيمٌGod said, "Then get out of here, for you are cast out,
15:35وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكَ ٱللَّعْنَةَ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلدِّينِAnd the curse will be upon you until the day of reckoning.
15:36قَالَ رَبِّ فَأَنظِرْنِىٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَHe said, "My Lord, then grant me respite until the day they are raised."
15:37قَالَ فَإِنَّكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُنظَرِينَGod said, "Then you are among those granted respite,
15:38إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ ٱلْوَقْتِ ٱلْمَعْلُومِuntil the day of the appointed time.
15:39قَالَ رَبِّ بِمَآ أَغْوَيْتَنِى لَأُزَيِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ وَلَأُغْوِيَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَHe said, "My Lord, because you have led me astray, I will make things on earth seem alluring to them, and I will lead them all astray,
15:40إِلَّا عِبَادَكَ مِنْهُمُ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَexcept your servants among them, the sincere ones.
15:41قَالَ هَـٰذَا صِرَٰطٌ عَلَىَّ مُسْتَقِيمٌGod said, "This is a straight path leading to me:
15:42إِنَّ عِبَادِى لَيْسَ لَكَ عَلَيْهِمْ سُلْطَـٰنٌ إِلَّا مَنِ ٱتَّبَعَكَ مِنَ ٱلْغَاوِينَOver my servants you have no authority — only over those who follow you from among the misguided.
15:43وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَAnd indeed, jahannam is the appointed place for them all.
15:44لَهَا سَبْعَةُ أَبْوَٰبٍ لِّكُلِّ بَابٍ مِّنْهُمْ جُزْءٌ مَّقْسُومٌIt has seven gates, and to each gate an allotted share of them is assigned.
15:45إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى جَنَّـٰتٍ وَعُيُونٍIndeed, those mindful of God will be among gardens and springs.
15:46ٱدْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَـٰمٍ ءَامِنِينَ"Enter them in peace, secure."
15:47وَنَزَعْنَا مَا فِى صُدُورِهِم مِّنْ غِلٍّ إِخْوَٰنًا عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُّتَقَـٰبِلِينَAnd we will strip away whatever bitterness lingers in their hearts — brothers, on couches facing one another.
15:48لَا يَمَسُّهُمْ فِيهَا نَصَبٌ وَمَا هُم مِّنْهَا بِمُخْرَجِينَNo weariness will touch them there, nor will they ever be removed from it.
15:49۞ نَبِّئْ عِبَادِىٓ أَنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُTell my servants that I am indeed the Forgiving, the Merciful,
15:50وَأَنَّ عَذَابِى هُوَ ٱلْعَذَابُ ٱلْأَلِيمُand that my punishment is the painful punishment.
15:51وَنَبِّئْهُمْ عَن ضَيْفِ إِبْرَٰهِيمَAnd tell them about the guests of Ibrahim.
15:52إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِ فَقَالُوا۟ سَلَـٰمًا قَالَ إِنَّا مِنكُمْ وَجِلُونَWhen they entered upon him and said, "Peace," he said, "We are wary of you."
15:53قَالُوا۟ لَا تَوْجَلْ إِنَّا نُبَشِّرُكَ بِغُلَـٰمٍ عَلِيمٍThey said, "Do not be afraid. We bring you good news of a boy who will have knowledge."
15:54قَالَ أَبَشَّرْتُمُونِى عَلَىٰٓ أَن مَّسَّنِىَ ٱلْكِبَرُ فَبِمَ تُبَشِّرُونَHe said, "Do you bring me this good news when old age has overtaken me? What kind of news is this you bring?"
15:55قَالُوا۟ بَشَّرْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ فَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْقَـٰنِطِينَThey said, "We bring you good news in truth, so do not be among those who despair."
15:56قَالَ وَمَن يَقْنَطُ مِن رَّحْمَةِ رَبِّهِۦٓ إِلَّا ٱلضَّآلُّونَHe said, "And who despairs of the mercy of his Lord except those who have gone astray?"
15:57قَالَ فَمَا خَطْبُكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَHe said, "Then what is your errand, O messengers?"
15:58قَالُوٓا۟ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمٍ مُّجْرِمِينَThey said, "We have been sent to a guilty people,
15:59إِلَّآ ءَالَ لُوطٍ إِنَّا لَمُنَجُّوهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَexcept the family of Lut — indeed, we shall deliver them all,
15:60إِلَّا ٱمْرَأَتَهُۥ قَدَّرْنَآ ۙ إِنَّهَا لَمِنَ ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَall except his wife — we have decreed that she will be among those who stay behind.
15:61فَلَمَّا جَآءَ ءَالَ لُوطٍ ٱلْمُرْسَلُونَWhen the messengers came to the family of Lut,
15:62قَالَ إِنَّكُمْ قَوْمٌ مُّنكَرُونَHe said, "You are people unknown to me."
15:63قَالُوا۟ بَلْ جِئْنَـٰكَ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ فِيهِ يَمْتَرُونَThey said, "No — we have come to you with what they kept disputing,
15:64وَأَتَيْنَـٰكَ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَإِنَّا لَصَـٰدِقُونَand we have come to you with the truth, and we speak truly.
15:65فَأَسْرِ بِأَهْلِكَ بِقِطْعٍ مِّنَ ٱلَّيْلِ وَٱتَّبِعْ أَدْبَـٰرَهُمْ وَلَا يَلْتَفِتْ مِنكُمْ أَحَدٌ وَٱمْضُوا۟ حَيْثُ تُؤْمَرُونَSo set out with your household in a portion of the night, and follow behind them. Let none of you look back. Go on to where you are commanded.
15:66وَقَضَيْنَآ إِلَيْهِ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْأَمْرَ أَنَّ دَابِرَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ مَقْطُوعٌ مُّصْبِحِينَAnd we made the decree clear to him: by morning, the last of these people would be cut off.
15:67وَجَآءَ أَهْلُ ٱلْمَدِينَةِ يَسْتَبْشِرُونَAnd the people of the city came, rejoicing at the news.
15:68قَالَ إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ ضَيْفِى فَلَا تَفْضَحُونِHe said, "These are my guests, so do not disgrace me.
15:69وَٱتَّقُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ وَلَا تُخْزُونِBe mindful of God, and do not disgrace me.”
15:70قَالُوٓا۟ أَوَلَمْ نَنْهَكَ عَنِ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَThey said, "Have we not forbidden you from taking in anyone at all?"
15:71قَالَ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ بَنَاتِىٓ إِن كُنتُمْ فَـٰعِلِينَHe said, "Here are my daughters, if you must act."
15:72لَعَمْرُكَ إِنَّهُمْ لَفِى سَكْرَتِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَBy your life, they were wandering blindly in their intoxication.
15:73فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُشْرِقِينَSo the blast seized them at sunrise.
15:74فَجَعَلْنَا عَـٰلِيَهَا سَافِلَهَا وَأَمْطَرْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ حِجَارَةً مِّن سِجِّيلٍAnd we turned the city upside down and rained upon them stones of baked clay.
15:75إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَـٰتٍ لِّلْمُتَوَسِّمِينَSurely in that are signs for those who discern.
15:76وَإِنَّهَا لَبِسَبِيلٍ مُّقِيمٍAnd indeed, it lies along a road still in use.
15:77إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَـَٔايَةً لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَSurely in that is a sign for the believers.
15:78وَإِن كَانَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْأَيْكَةِ لَظَـٰلِمِينَAnd the people of the thicket were wrongdoers too,
15:79فَٱنتَقَمْنَا مِنْهُمْ وَإِنَّهُمَا لَبِإِمَامٍ مُّبِينٍSo we took retribution from them, and both lie on a clearly visible road.
15:80وَلَقَدْ كَذَّبَ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْحِجْرِ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَAnd the people of al-Hijr denied the messengers.
15:81وَءَاتَيْنَـٰهُمْ ءَايَـٰتِنَا فَكَانُوا۟ عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَAnd we gave them our signs, but they turned away from them.
15:82وَكَانُوا۟ يَنْحِتُونَ مِنَ ٱلْجِبَالِ بُيُوتًا ءَامِنِينَThey carved out homes in the mountains, secure.
15:83فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ مُصْبِحِينَBut the blast seized them at daybreak,
15:84فَمَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُم مَّا كَانُوا۟ يَكْسِبُونَAnd all they had earned availed them nothing.
15:85وَمَا خَلَقْنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَـَٔاتِيَةٌ ۖ فَٱصْفَحِ ٱلصَّفْحَ ٱلْجَمِيلَWe did not create the heavens and the earth and what lies between them except in truth. The hour is surely coming, so forgive with a gracious forgiveness.
15:86إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْخَلَّـٰقُ ٱلْعَلِيمُIndeed, your Lord is the All-Knowing Creator.
15:87وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَـٰكَ سَبْعًا مِّنَ ٱلْمَثَانِى وَٱلْقُرْءَانَ ٱلْعَظِيمَAnd we have given you seven of the oft-repeated verses and the magnificent Qur'an.
15:88لَا تَمُدَّنَّ عَيْنَيْكَ إِلَىٰ مَا مَتَّعْنَا بِهِۦٓ أَزْوَٰجًا مِّنْهُمْ وَلَا تَحْزَنْ عَلَيْهِمْ وَٱخْفِضْ جَنَاحَكَ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَDo not stretch your eyes toward what we have given certain groups among them to enjoy, and do not grieve over them. Lower your wing to the believers.
15:89وَقُلْ إِنِّىٓ أَنَا ٱلنَّذِيرُ ٱلْمُبِينُAnd say, "I am the clear warner."
15:90كَمَآ أَنزَلْنَا عَلَى ٱلْمُقْتَسِمِينَjust as we sent down upon those who divide,
15:91ٱلَّذِينَ جَعَلُوا۟ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ عِضِينَthose who have broken the Qur'an into fragments.
15:92فَوَرَبِّكَ لَنَسْـَٔلَنَّهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَBy your Lord, we will question them all,
15:93عَمَّا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَabout what they used to do.
15:94فَٱصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَرُ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ ٱلْمُشْرِكِينَSo proclaim openly what you are commanded, and turn away from those who associate others with God.
15:95إِنَّا كَفَيْنَـٰكَ ٱلْمُسْتَهْزِءِينَIndeed, we are enough for you against the mockers,
15:96ٱلَّذِينَ يَجْعَلُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ ۚ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَthose who set up another god alongside God — they will come to know.
15:97وَلَقَدْ نَعْلَمُ أَنَّكَ يَضِيقُ صَدْرُكَ بِمَا يَقُولُونَAnd we know well that your heart is weighed down by what they say.
15:98فَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ وَكُن مِّنَ ٱلسَّـٰجِدِينَSo glorify your Lord with praise, and be among those who prostrate.
15:99وَٱعْبُدْ رَبَّكَ حَتَّىٰ يَأْتِيَكَ ٱلْيَقِينُAnd worship your Lord until what is certain comes to you.
