Surah Ibrahim —

Chapter 14 of the Qur'an · “Abraham” · 52 verses · revealed in Makkah

Alif Lam Ra. A book we have sent down to you, that you may bring people out of the depths of darkness into the light, by their Lord's permission, to the path of the Mighty, the Praiseworthy —
God, to whom belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. And woe to those who deny — from a severe punishment —
  3. 14:3 ٱلَّذِينَ يَسْتَحِبُّونَ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا عَلَى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ وَيَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا ۚ أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ فِى ضَلَـٰلٍۭ بَعِيدٍ those who prefer the life of this world over the hereafter, who turn others from the path of God and seek to make it crooked — they have wandered far astray.
We have never sent a messenger except in the language of his people, so that he could make things clear to them. Then God lets stray whom he wills and guides whom he wills, and he is the Mighty, the Wise.
And we sent Musa with our signs: "Bring your people out of the depths of darkness into the light, and remind them of the days of God." In that are signs for every one who is steadfast and grateful.
And remember when Musa said to his people, "Remember God's favor upon you when he delivered you from the people of Pharaoh, who were inflicting on you the worst of torments — slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a tremendous trial from your Lord."
And remember when your Lord proclaimed: 'If you are grateful, I will surely give you more; but if you deny, my punishment is severe.'
And Musa said, "If you are ungrateful — you and everyone on earth together — God is self-sufficient, worthy of all praise."
Has the story of those before you not reached you — the people of Nuh, and ʿAd, and Thamud, and those who came after them, known only to God? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs, but they put their hands to their mouths and said, "We reject what you have been sent with, and we are in deep doubt about what you call us to."
Their messengers said, "Can there be any doubt about God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth? He calls you so that he may forgive you your sins and grant you respite until an appointed term." They said, "You are only mortals like us. You want to turn us away from what our fathers used to worship. So bring us a clear authority."
Their messengers said to them, "We are only human beings like you, but God bestows his favor on whichever of his servants he wills. It is not for us to bring you any authority except by God's permission. And in God let the believers place their trust.
And why would we not place our trust in God, when he has guided us along our paths? We will surely endure with patience whatever harm you do to us. In God alone let the trusting place their trust.
Those who denied said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land unless you return to our way." So their Lord revealed to them: "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers,
And we will surely settle you in the land after them. That is for whoever stands in awe of my presence and fears my warning.
They sought judgment, and every obstinate tyrant was brought to ruin.
Beyond him lies jahannam, and he will be made to drink festering water,
He gulps it down but can barely swallow it. Death closes in on him from every side, yet he does not die — and beyond that lies a punishment still more severe.
The likeness of those who deny their Lord: their deeds are like ashes scattered by a fierce wind on a stormy day. They have no power over anything they earned. That is the far-gone straying.
Do you not see that God created the heavens and the earth in truth? If he wills, he can take you away and bring forth a new creation.
And that is no difficult matter for God.
They will all come forth before God, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "We were your followers — can you now shield us from any of God's punishment?" They will reply, "Had God guided us, we would have guided you. It is all the same for us now whether we rage or endure: there is no escape for us."
And Satan will say, once the matter is decided: "God promised you a true promise, and I promised you, then broke my word. I had no power over you, except that I called you and you answered me. So do not blame me — blame your own selves. I cannot rescue you, and you cannot rescue me. I reject your having associated me with God before." Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment.
And those who believed and did righteous deeds will be brought into gardens through which rivers flow, to remain there by their Lord's permission. Their greeting there is 'Peace.'
Do you not see how God draws a parable? A good word is like a good tree, its root firm and its branches reaching into the sky,
  25. 14:25 تُؤْتِىٓ أُكُلَهَا كُلَّ حِينٍۭ بِإِذْنِ رَبِّهَا ۗ وَيَضْرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْأَمْثَالَ لِلنَّاسِ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ yielding its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord. God sets forth such parables for people, so that they may take heed.
And the likeness of a corrupt word is a corrupt tree, torn up from the surface of the earth, with no foothold at all.
God keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word, in the life of this world and in the hereafter; and God lets the wrongdoers go astray. God does whatever he wills.
Have you not seen those who exchanged God's favor for ingratitude and led their people into the abode of ruin —
  29. 14:29 جَهَنَّمَ يَصْلَوْنَهَا ۖ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْقَرَارُ jahannam — they will burn in it, and a wretched place to settle.
They set up rivals to God to lead people astray from his path. Say: "Enjoy yourselves — your journey ends in the fire."
Tell my servants who believe to establish the prayer and to spend from what we have provided them, in secret and openly, before a day comes in which there will be no trade and no friendship.
God is the one who created the heavens and the earth, and sent down water from the sky, and brought forth fruits with it as provision for you; and he made the ships subject to you, to run upon the sea by his command, and made the rivers subject to you.
And he made the sun and the moon serve you, constant in their courses, and made the night and the day serve you.
And he gave you something of all that you asked of him. If you tried to count the blessings of God, you could never number them. Indeed, the human being is deeply unjust, deeply ungrateful.
And remember when Ibrahim said, "My Lord, make this land secure, and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.
My Lord, they have led many people astray. Whoever follows me is of me, and whoever disobeys me — you are forgiving, merciful.
Our Lord, I have settled some of my offspring in a barren valley near your sacred House, our Lord, so that they may establish the prayer. So incline the hearts of people toward them, and provide them with fruits, that they may be grateful.
Our Lord, you know what we conceal and what we make known. Nothing is hidden from God, on earth or in the heaven.
Praise belongs to God, who granted me Ismail and Ishaq in my old age. Truly, my Lord hears every prayer.
My Lord, make me one who establishes the prayer, and from my descendants as well. Our Lord, accept my supplication.
Our Lord, forgive me, my parents, and the believers on the day the reckoning is established.
Do not think that God is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them until a day when eyes will stare fixed in terror.
Rushing forward, their heads thrust up, their gaze unable to return to them, and their hearts an empty void.
And warn the people of a day when the punishment will come upon them, and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, give us a little more time — we will answer your call and follow the messengers." Had you not sworn before that you would never pass away?
And you settled in the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it became clear to you how we dealt with them, and we set forth for you the parables.
They schemed their scheme, and their scheme is with God, even if their scheme were such as to move mountains.
So never think that God will break his promise to his messengers. Indeed, God is mighty, the lord of retribution.
On the day when the earth is changed into another earth, and the heavens too, and they come forth before God, the One, the Overpowering—
And on that day you will see the guilty bound together in chains,
