Surah Al-Fajr — الفجر

Chapter 89 of the Qur'an · “The Dawn” · 30 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 89:1 وَٱلْفَجْرِ By the Daybreak,
2. 89:2 وَلَيَالٍ عَشْرٍ by the Ten Nights,
3. 89:3 وَٱلشَّفْعِ وَٱلْوَتْرِ by the even and the odd,
4. 89:4 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَسْرِ by the passing night––
5. 89:5 هَلْ فِى ذَٰلِكَ قَسَمٌ لِّذِى حِجْرٍ is this oath strong enough for a rational person?
6. 89:6 أَلَمْ تَرَ كَيْفَ فَعَلَ رَبُّكَ بِعَادٍ Have you [Prophet] considered how your Lord dealt with [the people] of 'Ad,
7. 89:7 إِرَمَ ذَاتِ ٱلْعِمَادِ of Iram, [the city] of lofty pillars,
8. 89:8 ٱلَّتِى لَمْ يُخْلَقْ مِثْلُهَا فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ whose like has never been made in any land,
9. 89:9 وَثَمُودَ ٱلَّذِينَ جَابُوا۟ ٱلصَّخْرَ بِٱلْوَادِ and the Thamud, who hewed into the rocks in the valley,
10. 89:10 وَفِرْعَوْنَ ذِى ٱلْأَوْتَادِ and the mighty and powerful Pharaoh?
11. 89:11 ٱلَّذِينَ طَغَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْبِلَـٰدِ All of them committed excesses in their lands,
12. 89:12 فَأَكْثَرُوا۟ فِيهَا ٱلْفَسَادَ and spread corruption there:
13. 89:13 فَصَبَّ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّكَ سَوْطَ عَذَابٍ your Lord let a scourge of punishment loose on them.
14. 89:14 إِنَّ رَبَّكَ لَبِٱلْمِرْصَادِ Your Lord is always watchful.
15. 89:15 فَأَمَّا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ رَبُّهُۥ فَأَكْرَمَهُۥ وَنَعَّمَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَكْرَمَنِ [The nature of] man is that, when his Lord tries him through honour and blessings, he says, ‘My Lord has honoured me,’
16. 89:16 وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ but when He tries him through the restriction of his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’
17. 89:17 كَلَّا ۖ بَل لَّا تُكْرِمُونَ ٱلْيَتِيمَ No indeed! You [people] do not honour orphans,
18. 89:18 وَلَا تَحَـٰٓضُّونَ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ ٱلْمِسْكِينِ you do not urge one another to feed the poor,
19. 89:19 وَتَأْكُلُونَ ٱلتُّرَاثَ أَكْلًا لَّمًّا you consume inheritance greedily,
20. 89:20 وَتُحِبُّونَ ٱلْمَالَ حُبًّا جَمًّا and you love wealth with a passion.
21. 89:21 كَلَّآ إِذَا دُكَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ دَكًّا دَكًّا No indeed! When the earth is pounded to dust, pounded and pounded,
22. 89:22 وَجَآءَ رَبُّكَ وَٱلْمَلَكُ صَفًّا صَفًّا when your Lord comes with the angels, rank upon rank,
23. 89:23 وَجِا۟ىٓءَ يَوْمَئِذٍۭ بِجَهَنَّمَ ۚ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَتَذَكَّرُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰ when Hell is that Day brought near- on that Day man will take heed, but what good will that be to him then?
24. 89:24 يَقُولُ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى قَدَّمْتُ لِحَيَاتِى He will say, ‘Would that I had provided for this life to come!’
25. 89:25 فَيَوْمَئِذٍ لَّا يُعَذِّبُ عَذَابَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ On that Day, no one will punish as He punishes,
26. 89:26 وَلَا يُوثِقُ وَثَاقَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ and no one will bind as He binds.
27. 89:27 يَـٰٓأَيَّتُهَا ٱلنَّفْسُ ٱلْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ ‘[But] you, soul at peace:
28. 89:28 ٱرْجِعِىٓ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً return to your Lord well pleased and well pleasing;
29. 89:29 فَٱدْخُلِى فِى عِبَـٰدِى go in among My servants;
30. 89:30 وَٱدْخُلِى جَنَّتِى and into My Garden.’
