Surah Al-Ghashiyah — الغاشية

Chapter 88 of the Qur'an · “The Overwhelming” · 26 verses · revealed in Makkah

  1. 88:1 هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ Have you heard tell [Prophet] about the Overwhelming Event?
  2. 88:2 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ On that Day, there will be downcast faces,
  3. 88:3 عَامِلَةٌ نَّاصِبَةٌ toiling and weary,
  4. 88:4 تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةً as they enter the blazing Fire
  5. 88:5 تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍ and are forced to drink from a boiling spring,
  6. 88:6 لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍ with no food for them except bitter dry thorns
  7. 88:7 لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍ that neither nourish nor satisfy hunger.
  8. 88:8 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَّاعِمَةٌ On that Day there will also be faces radiant with bliss,
  9. 88:9 لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌ well pleased with their labour,
  10. 88:10 فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ in a lofty garden,
  11. 88:11 لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةً where they will hear no idle talk,
  12. 88:12 فِيهَا عَيْنٌ جَارِيَةٌ with a flowing spring,
  13. 88:13 فِيهَا سُرُرٌ مَّرْفُوعَةٌ raised couches,
  14. 88:14 وَأَكْوَابٌ مَّوْضُوعَةٌ goblets placed before them,
  15. 88:15 وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌ cushions set in rows,
  16. 88:16 وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ and carpets spread.
  17. 88:17 أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ Do the disbelievers not see how rain clouds are formed <sup foot_note=77646>1</sup>
  18. 88:18 وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ how the heavens are lifted,
  19. 88:19 وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ how the mountains are raised high,
  20. 88:20 وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ how the earth is spread out?
  21. 88:21 فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌ So [Prophet] warn them: your only task is to give warning,
  22. 88:22 لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ you are not there to control them.
  23. 88:23 إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ As for those who turn away and disbelieve,
  24. 88:24 فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ God will inflict the greatest torment upon them.
  25. 88:25 إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ It is to Us they will return,
  26. 88:26 ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم and then it is for Us to call them to account.
