وَأَمَّآ إِذَا مَا ٱبْتَلَىٰهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُۥ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّىٓ أَهَـٰنَنِ
Wa ammaaa izaa mabtalaahu faqadara 'alaihi rizqahoo fa yaqoolu Rabbeee ahaanan
but when He tries him through the restriction of his provision, he says, ‘My Lord has humiliated me.’
But when he tests him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
Both halves of the pair are called a test, so the honoring described just before is as much a trial as this shortage. Qadara means to measure out, to give in a set amount, and the complaint hears a careful measure as an insult. What follows answers it by turning to conduct: what this person did for the orphan and for the hungry.
