Surah 'Abasa — عبس
Chapter 80 of the Qur'an · “He Frowned” · 42 verses · revealed in Makkah
- 80:1 عَبَسَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ He frowned and turned away
- 80:2 أَن جَآءَهُ ٱلْأَعْمَىٰ when the blind man came to him––
- 80:3 وَمَا يُدْرِيكَ لَعَلَّهُۥ يَزَّكَّىٰٓ for all you know, he might have grown in spirit,
- 80:4 أَوْ يَذَّكَّرُ فَتَنفَعَهُ ٱلذِّكْرَىٰٓ or taken note of something useful to him.
- 80:5 أَمَّا مَنِ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰ For the self-satisfied one
- 80:6 فَأَنتَ لَهُۥ تَصَدَّىٰ you go out of your way––
- 80:7 وَمَا عَلَيْكَ أَلَّا يَزَّكَّىٰ though you are not to be blamed for his lack of spiritual growth––
- 80:8 وَأَمَّا مَن جَآءَكَ يَسْعَىٰ but from the one who has come to you full of eagerness
- 80:9 وَهُوَ يَخْشَىٰ and awe
- 80:10 فَأَنتَ عَنْهُ تَلَهَّىٰ you allow yourself to be distracted.
- 80:11 كَلَّآ إِنَّهَا تَذْكِرَةٌ No indeed! This [Quran] is a lesson
- 80:12 فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ from which those who wish to be taught should learn,
- 80:13 فِى صُحُفٍ مُّكَرَّمَةٍ [written] on honoured,
- 80:14 مَّرْفُوعَةٍ مُّطَهَّرَةٍۭ exalted, pure pages,
- 80:15 بِأَيْدِى سَفَرَةٍ by the hands of
- 80:16 كِرَامٍۭ بَرَرَةٍ noble and virtuous scribes.
- 80:17 قُتِلَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ مَآ أَكْفَرَهُۥ Woe to man! How ungrateful he is!
- 80:18 مِنْ أَىِّ شَىْءٍ خَلَقَهُۥ From what thing does God create him?
- 80:19 مِن نُّطْفَةٍ خَلَقَهُۥ فَقَدَّرَهُۥ He creates him from a droplet, He proportions him,
- 80:20 ثُمَّ ٱلسَّبِيلَ يَسَّرَهُۥ He makes the way easy for him,
- 80:21 ثُمَّ أَمَاتَهُۥ فَأَقْبَرَهُۥ then He causes him to die and be buried.
- 80:22 ثُمَّ إِذَا شَآءَ أَنشَرَهُۥ When He wills, He will raise him up again.
- 80:23 كَلَّا لَمَّا يَقْضِ مَآ أَمَرَهُۥ Yet man does not fulfil God’s commands.
- 80:24 فَلْيَنظُرِ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ إِلَىٰ طَعَامِهِۦٓ Let man consider the food he eats!
- 80:25 أَنَّا صَبَبْنَا ٱلْمَآءَ صَبًّا We pour down abundant water
- 80:26 ثُمَّ شَقَقْنَا ٱلْأَرْضَ شَقًّا and cause the soil to split open.
- 80:27 فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا We make grain grow,
- 80:28 وَعِنَبًا وَقَضْبًا and vines, fresh vegetation,
- 80:29 وَزَيْتُونًا وَنَخْلًا olive trees, date palms,
- 80:30 وَحَدَآئِقَ غُلْبًا luscious gardens,
- 80:31 وَفَـٰكِهَةً وَأَبًّا fruits, and fodder:
- 80:32 مَّتَـٰعًا لَّكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَـٰمِكُمْ all for you and your livestock to enjoy.
- 80:33 فَإِذَا جَآءَتِ ٱلصَّآخَّةُ When the Deafening Blast comes––
- 80:34 يَوْمَ يَفِرُّ ٱلْمَرْءُ مِنْ أَخِيهِ the Day man will flee from his own brother,
- 80:35 وَأُمِّهِۦ وَأَبِيهِ his mother, his father,
- 80:36 وَصَـٰحِبَتِهِۦ وَبَنِيهِ his wife, his children:
- 80:37 لِكُلِّ ٱمْرِئٍ مِّنْهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ شَأْنٌ يُغْنِيهِ each of them will be absorbed in concerns of their own on that Day-
- 80:38 وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ on that Day some faces will be beaming,
- 80:39 ضَاحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ laughing, and rejoicing,
- 80:40 وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ but some faces will be dust-stained
- 80:41 تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ and covered in darkness:
- 80:42 أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَفَرَةُ ٱلْفَجَرَةُ those are the disbelievers, the licentious.
