فَأَنۢبَتْنَا فِيهَا حَبًّا
Fa ambatna feeha habba
We make grain grow,
and we caused grain to grow in it,
Grain leads a list of eight, the staple named ahead of grapes, olives and orchards, so the sequence moves from what keeps a person alive to what makes living pleasant. The verbs in the chain are forceful: water poured down, the earth split open, and only then growth — ordinary bread arrives as the result of something done to the ground. Surah ʿAbasa asked the reader to look at what he eats, the smallest object it could have chosen.
