فَإِذَا بَرِقَ ٱلْبَصَرُ
Fa izaa bariqal basar
جب آنکھیں چندھیا جائیں
When sight is dazzled,
The order is worth noticing: one person's eye comes first, before the moon and then the sun, so the cosmic scale opens out from a single startled face. Bariqa shares its root with barq, lightning, and describes an eye struck fixed and unable to look away. The surah has just been answering someone who asked when the day would come, and the answer arrives as a physical sensation rather than a date.
