Surah Al-Qiyamah — 75:23

Reflection

This half-line became the main scriptural anchor for the long argument over whether God will be seen in the hereafter. Traditionalist theologians took the gazing at face value; the Muʿtazila pointed out that the verb with this preposition can also mean waiting, and read the sense as awaiting their Lord's reward. Neither side persuaded the other, and the surah moves straight on to the faces of everyone else.
