وَيْلٌ لِّكُلِّ هُمَزَةٍ لُّمَزَةٍ
Wai lul-li kulli hu mazatil-lumaza
ہر طعن آمیز اشارتیں کرنے والے چغل خور کی خرابی ہے
Woe to every slanderer and backbiter,
Both words are intensive forms, the pattern Arabic uses for someone who does a thing by habit: belittling others is this man's settled manner. Commentators differ over which is done with the tongue and which with a look or a gesture, and the pairing may cover the whole range between them. The surah then ties the habit to money, so the mockery it opens with turns out to be the behavior of a man counting his pile.
