Some nights the body lies down while the mind keeps working, replaying the day and rehearsing tomorrow. The Qur'an speaks to that exhaustion with unusual tenderness. It calls sleep a mercy, the night a covering, and drowsiness a form of security sent down when fear runs high.
These verses return rest to its rightful place as a gift rather than a task. God, who never tires, made you someone who does, and He built pause into the design. Read slowly, and let the reminder settle: you are permitted to stop.
25:47 — And it is he who made the night a covering for you, and sleep a rest, and made the day a rising.
30:23 — And among his signs is your sleep by night and by day, and your seeking of his bounty. In that are signs for a people who listen.
39:42 — God takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that have not yet died, in their sleep. He keeps those for whom death has been decreed and sends the others back until an appointed term. In that are signs for a people who reflect.
8:11 — Remember when God wrapped you in sleep as reassurance from him, and sent down water from the sky to purify you with it, to remove from you Satan's defilement, to bind your hearts together, and to steady your feet.
6:60 — And it is God who takes your souls by night and knows what you have done by day, then raises you up in it so that an appointed term may be fulfilled. Then you will return to him, and he will tell you what you used to do.
2:255 — God — there is no god but he, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes him nor sleep. To him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who can intercede with him except by his permission? God knows what lies before them and what lies behind them, and they grasp nothing of his knowledge except what he wills. And his throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not weary him. And he is the Most High, the Most Great.
