Surah An-Naba — 78:9

وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا

Waja'alnan naumakum subata

and made your sleep a rest,

Reflection

Subāt shares a root with sabt, the day of ceasing that names the Sabbath, and its underlying sense is a cutting off. Early readers divided over which meaning governs here: plain rest, or the nightly suspension of movement in a body. Both readings leave sleep as something done to a person rather than something they do.
