Chapter 68 of the Qur'an · “The Pen” · 52 verses · revealed in Makkah

Nun. By the pen and what they inscribe,
  2. 68:2 مَآ أَنتَ بِنِعْمَةِ رَبِّكَ بِمَجْنُونٍ by the grace of your Lord, you are not mad.
  3. 68:3 وَإِنَّ لَكَ لَأَجْرًا غَيْرَ مَمْنُونٍ and truly, yours is a reward never-ending.
  4. 68:4 وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍ and you stand upon a magnificent character.
Soon you will see, and they will see
  6. 68:6 بِأَييِّكُمُ ٱلْمَفْتُونُ which of you is the afflicted one.
Indeed, your Lord knows best who has strayed from his path, and he knows best those who are guided.
So do not obey those who deny the truth.
  9. 68:9 وَدُّوا۟ لَوْ تُدْهِنُ فَيُدْهِنُونَ they wish you would compromise, so they too could compromise.
And do not obey every contemptible swearer of oaths,
  11. 68:11 هَمَّازٍ مَّشَّآءٍۭ بِنَمِيمٍ a slanderer, going about spreading malicious gossip,
  12. 68:12 مَّنَّاعٍ لِّلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ أَثِيمٍ withholder of good, transgressor, steeped in sin,
  13. 68:13 عُتُلٍّۭ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ زَنِيمٍ coarse and brutal, and on top of that, an impostor.
  14. 68:14 أَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ وَبَنِينَ just because he has wealth and sons,
When our signs are recited to him, he says, "Legends of the ancients."
And we will brand him on the snout.
Indeed, we have tested them as we tested the owners of the garden, when they swore they would harvest its fruit by morning,
  18. 68:18 وَلَا يَسْتَثْنُونَ making no exception.
Then a visitation from your Lord passed over it while they slept,
  20. 68:20 فَأَصْبَحَتْ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ and by morning it lay stripped bare.
At morning they called out to one another,
Set out early to your field if you mean to harvest."
So they set off, whispering to one another,
Let no poor person enter it today against you."
  25. 68:25 وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍ قَـٰدِرِينَ and they set out early, resolute and confident in their power.
But when they saw it, they said, "We have surely lost our way!"
No — we are left with nothing.
The most balanced among them said, "Did I not tell you — why do you not glorify God?"
They said, "Glory be to our Lord — truly, we were wrongdoers."
Then they turned to one another, trading blame.
They said, "Woe to us — we were truly transgressors.
Perhaps our Lord will give us something better in its place — to our Lord we turn in hope.
Such is the punishment. And the punishment of the hereafter is greater, if only they knew.
Indeed, for those mindful of God there are gardens of bliss with their Lord.
Are we to treat those who surrender like the guilty?
What is the matter with you? How do you judge?
Or do you have a scripture from which you study,
  38. 68:38 إِنَّ لَكُمْ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ that in it you shall have whatever you choose?
Or do you hold oaths from us, binding until the day of resurrection, that whatever you decide is yours?
Ask them which of them will vouch for that.
Or do they have partners? Then let them bring their partners, if they are truthful.
On the day when the shin is laid bare and they are called to prostrate, they will not be able to,
Their eyes lowered, humiliation overtaking them — for they had been called to prostrate while they were still sound.
So leave to me those who deny this message; we will draw them on, step by step, from where they do not know.
And I give them respite — indeed, my plan is firm.
Or do you ask them for a reward, so that they are weighed down by debt?
Or do they hold the unseen, writing it down?
So be patient for your Lord's decree, and do not be like the companion of the fish, who cried out while choked with grief.
Had a blessing from his Lord not reached him, he would have been cast onto the barren shore, disgraced.
But his Lord chose him and placed him among the righteous.
Those who deny almost strike you down with their glares when they hear the Reminder, and they say, "He is surely mad."
Yet it is nothing but a reminder to all the worlds.
