Surah Al-Waqi'ah — الواقعة

Chapter 56 of the Qur'an · “The Inevitable” · 96 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 56:1 إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلْوَاقِعَةُ When the inevitable event comes to pass,
2. 56:2 لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ none will deny its coming,
3. 56:3 خَافِضَةٌ رَّافِعَةٌ bringing some low, raising others high.
4. 56:4 إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلْأَرْضُ رَجًّا when the earth is shaken with a violent shaking,
5. 56:5 وَبُسَّتِ ٱلْجِبَالُ بَسًّا and the mountains are crushed to dust
6. 56:6 فَكَانَتْ هَبَآءً مُّنۢبَثًّا becoming scattered dust,
7. 56:7 وَكُنتُمْ أَزْوَٰجًا ثَلَـٰثَةً and you will be three kinds:
8. 56:8 فَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ The companions of the right — what of the companions of the right?
9. 56:9 وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْمَشْـَٔمَةِ And the companions of the left — what of the companions of the left?
10. 56:10 وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ And the foremost — the foremost:
11. 56:11 أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبُونَ Those are the ones brought near.
12. 56:12 فِى جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ in gardens of delight,
13. 56:13 ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ a multitude from those of old,
14. 56:14 وَقَلِيلٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ and a few from the later generations,
15. 56:15 عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَّوْضُونَةٍ On couches woven with gold,
16. 56:16 مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَـٰبِلِينَ reclining upon them, facing one another.
17. 56:17 يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ Eternal youths will circulate among them,
18. 56:18 بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِّن مَّعِينٍ with goblets and pitchers and a cup from a flowing spring,
19. 56:19 لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ from which they get no headache, nor are they made drunk,
20. 56:20 وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ and fruit of their choosing,
21. 56:21 وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِّمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ and the meat of any bird they desire,
22. 56:22 وَحُورٌ عِينٌ and companions with lustrous, wide eyes,
23. 56:23 كَأَمْثَـٰلِ ٱللُّؤْلُؤِ ٱلْمَكْنُونِ like pearls kept hidden,
24. 56:24 جَزَآءًۢ بِمَا كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَ a reward for what they used to do.
25. 56:25 لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا There they will hear no idle talk and no sinful speech,
26. 56:26 إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَـٰمًا سَلَـٰمًا only the saying: peace, peace.
27. 56:27 وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلْيَمِينِ And the companions of the right — what of the companions of the right?
28. 56:28 فِى سِدْرٍ مَّخْضُودٍ among thornless lote trees,
29. 56:29 وَطَلْحٍ مَّنضُودٍ and clustered fruit-laden trees,
30. 56:30 وَظِلٍّ مَّمْدُودٍ and shade outstretched,
31. 56:31 وَمَآءٍ مَّسْكُوبٍ and flowing water,
32. 56:32 وَفَـٰكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ and abundant fruit,
33. 56:33 لَّا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ never cut off, never forbidden,
34. 56:34 وَفُرُشٍ مَّرْفُوعَةٍ and couches raised high,
35. 56:35 إِنَّآ أَنشَأْنَـٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءً Indeed, we have brought them into being, a new creation,
36. 56:36 فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا and made them virgins,
37. 56:37 عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا loving companions of equal age,
38. 56:38 لِّأَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ for the companions of the right,
39. 56:39 ثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ a multitude from those of old,
40. 56:40 وَثُلَّةٌ مِّنَ ٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ and a multitude from those of later times.
41. 56:41 وَأَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصْحَـٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ And the companions of the left — what of the companions of the left?
42. 56:42 فِى سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ amid scorching wind and scalding water,
43. 56:43 وَظِلٍّ مِّن يَحْمُومٍ and a shadow of black smoke,
44. 56:44 لَّا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ neither cool nor kind.
45. 56:45 إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ Indeed, before this they lived in indulgent luxury,
46. 56:46 وَكَانُوا۟ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلْحِنثِ ٱلْعَظِيمِ and they persisted in grave wrongdoing,
47. 56:47 وَكَانُوا۟ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَـٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ And they used to say, 'When we are dead and have become dust and bones, will we really be raised again?'
48. 56:48 أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلْأَوَّلُونَ And our forefathers of old as well?"
49. 56:49 قُلْ إِنَّ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلْـَٔاخِرِينَ Say: indeed, the earliest and the latest
50. 56:50 لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَـٰتِ يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ will all be gathered together for the appointed time of a known day.
51. 56:51 ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبُونَ Then you, the misguided, the deniers,
52. 56:52 لَـَٔاكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٍ مِّن زَقُّومٍ will surely eat from the tree of Zaqqum,
53. 56:53 فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنْهَا ٱلْبُطُونَ filling your bellies from it,
54. 56:54 فَشَـٰرِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ ٱلْحَمِيمِ and drink scalding water on top of it,
55. 56:55 فَشَـٰرِبُونَ شُرْبَ ٱلْهِيمِ drinking as parched camels drink.
56. 56:56 هَـٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلدِّينِ This is their welcome on the day of reckoning.
57. 56:57 نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ It is we who created you — so why will you not affirm the truth?
58. 56:58 أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تُمْنُونَ Have you considered the semen you emit?
59. 56:59 ءَأَنتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْخَـٰلِقُونَ Is it you who create it, or are we the creators?
60. 56:60 نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ ٱلْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ We have decreed death among you, and we cannot be outrun.
61. 56:61 عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمْثَـٰلَكُمْ وَنُنشِئَكُمْ فِى مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ from replacing you with others like you and bringing you into being in a form you do not know.
62. 56:62 وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ ٱلنَّشْأَةَ ٱلْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ You already know the first creation — will you not then take heed?
63. 56:63 أَفَرَءَيْتُم مَّا تَحْرُثُونَ Have you considered the seed you sow?
64. 56:64 ءَأَنتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلزَّٰرِعُونَ Is it you who make it grow, or are we the ones who grow it?
65. 56:65 لَوْ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ حُطَـٰمًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ If we willed, we could turn it to chaff, and you would be left lamenting:
66. 56:66 إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ "We are burdened with loss,
67. 56:67 بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ No — we are left with nothing.
68. 56:68 أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلْمَآءَ ٱلَّذِى تَشْرَبُونَ Have you considered the water you drink?
69. 56:69 ءَأَنتُمْ أَنزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنزِلُونَ Was it you who sent it down from the clouds, or are we the ones who send it down?
70. 56:70 لَوْ نَشَآءُ جَعَلْنَـٰهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ If we willed, we could make it bitter — so will you not be grateful?
71. 56:71 أَفَرَءَيْتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِى تُورُونَ Have you considered the fire you kindle?
72. 56:72 ءَأَنتُمْ أَنشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمْ نَحْنُ ٱلْمُنشِـُٔونَ Was it you who brought its tree into being, or are we the ones who bring it forth?
73. 56:73 نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَـٰهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَـٰعًا لِّلْمُقْوِينَ We made it a reminder and a provision for those who travel through the wilderness.
74. 56:74 فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.
75. 56:75 ۞ فَلَآ أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ I swear by the positions of the stars—
76. 56:76 وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٌ لَّوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ and indeed, if you only knew, it is a mighty oath—
77. 56:77 إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرْءَانٌ كَرِيمٌ indeed, this is a noble Qur'an,
78. 56:78 فِى كِتَـٰبٍ مَّكْنُونٍ in a well-guarded book
79. 56:79 لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلْمُطَهَّرُونَ none touch it but the purified,
80. 56:80 تَنزِيلٌ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ A revelation sent down from the Lord of all the worlds.
81. 56:81 أَفَبِهَـٰذَا ٱلْحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدْهِنُونَ Is it this message that you take so lightly?
82. 56:82 وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ and make your denial the return for what sustains you?
83. 56:83 فَلَوْلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلْحُلْقُومَ Why, then, when the soul reaches the throat,
84. 56:84 وَأَنتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنظُرُونَ and you are looking on at that moment—
85. 56:85 وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنكُمْ وَلَـٰكِن لَّا تُبْصِرُونَ and we are closer to him than you are, though you do not see —
86. 56:86 فَلَوْلَآ إِن كُنتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ Why then, if you are not to be called to account,
87. 56:87 تَرْجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمْ صَـٰدِقِينَ bring it back, if you are truthful?
88. 56:88 فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُقَرَّبِينَ If he is among those brought near,
89. 56:89 فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ then rest, and fragrance, and a garden of bliss.
90. 56:90 وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ And if he is among the companions of the right,
91. 56:91 فَسَلَـٰمٌ لَّكَ مِنْ أَصْحَـٰبِ ٱلْيَمِينِ then: peace be upon you, from the companions of the right.
92. 56:92 وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ But if he is among the deniers who went astray,
93. 56:93 فَنُزُلٌ مِّنْ حَمِيمٍ then a welcome of scalding water,
94. 56:94 وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ and burning in jahim.
95. 56:95 إِنَّ هَـٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلْيَقِينِ Indeed, this is the truth of certainty.
96. 56:96 فَسَبِّحْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلْعَظِيمِ So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent.
