Surah As-Saffat — 37:96

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ

Wallaahu khalaqakum wa maa ta'maloon

when God created you and all that you make?

Reflection

Ibrahim is standing among the idols he has just broken, and his argument is about craftsmanship: the carver and his material both came from somewhere. Grammarians read ma ta'malun two ways, as the things you make or as your making itself, and the second reading turned this half-verse into a central proof text in the long dispute over whether human acts are themselves created. The phrase is left open.
