إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِى ٱلْغَـٰبِرِينَ
Illaa 'ajoozan fil ghaabireen
except an old woman among those who stayed behind.
The exception is stated in a single clause of four words, and she is identified only by age and by where she stayed. Ghābirīn covers both remaining behind and passing away, so one participle carries her choice and her end together. Lut's whole story is retold here at speed, and the rescue is qualified before the sentence describing it has finished.
