Surah Hud — 11:105

On the day it comes, no soul will speak except by his permission. Among them will be the wretched and the blessed.

Reflection

Two categories arrive here and are then unpacked in order, the wretched in the verses immediately after and the blessed at the end of the passage, so the line works as a heading for what follows. The silence is the arresting detail. Every human being is gathered, and no one may speak on his own behalf until permitted, which reverses the ordinary instinct to get one's account in first.
