Chapter 11 of the Qur'an · “Hud” · 123 verses · revealed in Makkah
Alif Lam Ra. A book whose verses are perfected, then set forth in detail, from One all-wise, all-aware.
Worship none but God. I am a warner to you from him, and a bearer of good news.
And seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn back to him in repentance, and he will grant you fair enjoyment for an appointed term, and give to everyone of merit his due. But if you turn away, then I fear for you the punishment of a tremendous day.
To God is your return, and he has power over all things.
See how they fold their chests inward to hide from him. Yet even when they wrap themselves in their garments, he knows what they conceal and what they declare. Indeed, he knows what is held within the chest.
There is no creature on earth whose provision is not upon God, and he knows its dwelling place and its place of rest. All of it is in a clear record.
And it is he who created the heavens and the earth in six days, and his throne was upon the water — to test which of you is best in deed. Yet if you say, 'You will be raised again after death,' those who deny will surely say, 'This is nothing but plain magic.'
And if we delay the punishment from them until a measured term, they will surely say, "What is holding it back?" Truly, on the day it reaches them, it will not be turned away from them, and what they used to mock will close in upon them.
And if we let the human being taste a mercy from us and then withdraw it from him, he becomes despairing, ungrateful.
But if we let him taste favor after hardship has touched him, he is sure to say, "My troubles have left me." He becomes exultant and boastful —
Except for those who are patient and do righteous deeds — for them is forgiveness and a great reward.
Are you, then, about to abandon part of what is revealed to you, with your chest tightening at it, because they say, "Why has no treasure been sent down to him, or an angel come with him?" You are only a warner, and God is the guardian over all things.
Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "Then bring ten suras like it, invented, and call on whomever you can besides God, if you are truthful."
And if they do not respond to you, then know that it has been sent down with God's knowledge, and that there is no god but he. Will you, then, surrender?
Whoever desires the life of this world and its adornments — we will repay them in full for their deeds within it, and they will not be shortchanged in it.
These are the ones who will have nothing in the hereafter but the fire. Whatever they produced there has come to nothing, and whatever they used to do is worthless.
Can such a person be compared — one who stands on clear evidence from his Lord, recited by a witness from him, preceded by the Book of Musa as a guide and a mercy? These believe in it. But whoever among the factions denies it, the fire is his appointed place. So be in no doubt about it: it is the truth from your Lord, though most people do not believe.
And who does greater wrong than one who invents lies against God? Such people will be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses will say, "These are the ones who lied against their Lord." The curse of God is upon the wrongdoers —
11:19ٱلَّذِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ وَيَبْغُونَهَا عِوَجًا وَهُم بِٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ هُمْ كَـٰفِرُونَthose who turn others from the path of God and seek to make it crooked, and who deny the hereafter.
They could not escape on earth, and they had no protectors apart from God. Their punishment will be doubled. They could not bear to hear, and they could not see.
These are the ones who have lost their own souls, and what they used to invent has deserted them.
Without doubt, in the hereafter they will be the greatest losers.
Those who believe, do righteous deeds, and humble themselves before their Lord — they are the companions of the garden, and there they will remain.
The two groups are like the blind and the deaf set against the seeing and the hearing. Are the two alike? Will you not take heed?
And we sent Nuh to his people: "I am a clear warner to you.
11:26أَن لَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ ۖ إِنِّىٓ أَخَافُ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابَ يَوْمٍ أَلِيمٍthat you worship none but God. Truly, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day.
The chiefs of his people who denied said, "We see you as nothing but a human being like us, and we see no one following you except the lowest among us, and only at first glance. We see no merit in you over us — rather, we think you are liars."
He said, "My people, consider this: if I stand on clear evidence from my Lord, and he has granted me a mercy from himself that has been hidden from your sight — can we force it upon you when you are unwilling?"
My people, I ask you for no wealth in return for this — my reward rests with God alone. And I will not drive away those who believe; they are surely going to meet their Lord. But I see that you are a people acting in ignorance.
And my people, who would defend me against God if I drove them away? Will you not take heed?
I do not say to you that I hold the treasures of God, nor that I know the unseen, nor do I say I am an angel, nor do I say of those whom your eyes look down upon that God will never grant them any good — God knows best what is within their souls. If I did, I would be among the wrongdoers.
They said, "Nuh, you have argued with us, and argued at length. Bring upon us what you threaten us with, if you are truthful."
He said, "Only God will bring it upon you, if he wills, and you cannot thwart him.
My counsel will not benefit you, however much I wish to counsel you, if God intends to let you go astray. He is your Lord, and to him you will be returned.
Or do they say, "He has invented it"? Say, "If I have invented it, then my crime is upon me; but I am free of the crimes you commit."
And it was revealed to Nuh: "None of your people will believe except those who already have, so do not grieve over what they have been doing.
Build the ship under our eyes and by our inspiration, and do not address me concerning those who have done wrong — they are to be drowned.
And he was building the ark, and whenever the chiefs of his people passed by him, they mocked him. He said, "If you mock us, we will mock you just as you mock,
You will come to know who will be struck by a punishment that disgraces him, and upon whom a lasting punishment will descend."
And when our command came and the oven gushed forth, we said, "Load onto it a pair from every kind, and your family — except those against whom the word has already gone forth — and whoever has believed." But only a few had believed with him.
And he said, "Board it. In the name of God is its course and its mooring. Indeed, my Lord is forgiving, merciful."
And it sailed with them through waves like mountains, and Nuh called out to his son, who had kept himself apart, "My son, come aboard with us — do not stay with those who deny."
He said, "I will take refuge on a mountain that will protect me from the water." Nuh said, "Today there is no protector from God's command, except for the one on whom he has mercy." And the waves came between them, and he was among the drowned.
And it was said, "Earth, swallow your water; sky, hold back." The water receded, the matter was decreed, and the ark came to rest upon Mount Judi. And it was said, "Away with the wrongdoing people."
And Nuh called out to his Lord, saying, "My Lord, my son is of my family, and your promise is true, and you are the most just of judges."
God said, "Nuh, he is not of your family; his conduct was not righteous. So do not ask me about what you have no knowledge of. I warn you, lest you be among the ignorant."
He said, "My Lord, I seek refuge in you from asking you about what I have no knowledge of. Unless you forgive me and have mercy on me, I will be among the losers."
It was said, "Nuh, descend with peace from us and blessings upon you and upon nations to come from those with you. And there are nations we will let enjoy life for a time, then a painful punishment from us will reach them."
These are accounts of the unseen that we reveal to you. Neither you nor your people knew them before this. So be patient — the final outcome belongs to those who are mindful of God.
And to ʿAad we sent their brother Hud. He said, "My people, worship God. You have no god other than him. You are only inventing falsehood.
My people, I ask no reward from you for this. My reward rests only with the one who originated me. Will you not use your reason?
My people, ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn back to him in repentance, and he will send the sky upon you pouring with rain and add strength to your strength. Do not turn away as criminals.
They said, "Hud, you have brought us no clear proof, and we will not abandon our gods on your word alone, nor will we believe in you.
We can only say that one of our gods has struck you with some harm." He said, "I call God to witness, and bear witness yourselves, that I am free of what you associate with him
So scheme against me, all of you together, and grant me no respite.
I have placed my trust in God, my Lord and your Lord. There is no living creature he does not hold by its forelock. Indeed, my Lord is on a straight path.
If you turn away, I have already delivered to you the message I was sent with. My Lord will bring another people to succeed you, and you cannot harm him in the least. Indeed, my Lord is the Guardian over all things.
And when our command came, we delivered Hud and those who believed with him, by a mercy from us; we delivered them from a harsh punishment.
Such were Aad: they rejected the signs of their Lord, defied his messengers, and followed the command of every stubborn tyrant.
A curse was set to follow them in this world and on the day of resurrection. Indeed, 'Ad denied their Lord — so away with 'Ad, the people of Hud!
And to Thamud, we sent their brother Salih. He said, "My people, worship God — you have no god other than him. It was he who brought you forth from the earth and settled you upon it, so seek his forgiveness and turn back to him in repentance. Indeed, my Lord is near, ever-responsive."
They said, "Salih, before this you were one in whom we placed our hope. Do you forbid us to worship what our fathers worshipped? We are in deep, unsettling doubt about what you are calling us to."
He said, "My people, consider this: if I stand on clear proof from my Lord, and he has granted me mercy from himself, who would defend me against God if I disobeyed him? You would only add to my ruin.
And my people, this is the she-camel of God — a sign for you. So let her graze on God's earth, and do not touch her with harm, or a punishment close at hand will seize you.
But they hamstrung her, so he said, "Enjoy yourselves in your homes for three days. That is a promise that will not be broken."
When our command came, we saved Salih and those who believed with him, by mercy from us, from the disgrace of that day. Indeed, your Lord is the Strong, the Mighty.
And the blast seized those who did wrong, and morning found them lying lifeless in their homes,
11:68كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَآ ۗ أَلَآ إِنَّ ثَمُودَا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ ۗ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّثَمُودَas though they had never lived there at all. Truly, Thamud denied their Lord — so away with Thamud.
Our messengers came to Ibrahim with good news. They said, "Peace." He answered, "Peace," and without delay he brought a roasted calf.
But when he saw that their hands did not reach toward it, he grew uneasy with them and felt a fear of them. They said, "Do not fear. We have been sent to the people of Lut."
His wife was standing there, and she laughed. So we gave her glad tidings of Ishaq, and after Ishaq, Yaqub.
She said, "Oh, woe to me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman and my husband here is an old man? This is truly a strange thing!"
They said, "Are you astonished at what God has decreed? The mercy of God and his blessings are upon you, people of this house. Indeed, he is worthy of all praise, full of glory."
When the alarm had left Ibrahim and the good news reached him, he began to plead with us for the people of Lut.
Ibrahim was truly forbearing, tender-hearted, ever turning back to God.
Ibrahim, turn away from this. The command of your Lord has already come, and a punishment is coming to them that cannot be turned back."
When our messengers came to Lut, he was troubled on their account and felt powerless to protect them, and said, "This is a grievous day."
And his people came rushing toward him — they had long been committing wicked deeds. He said, "My people, here are my daughters; they are purer for you. So be mindful of God, and do not shame me before my guests. Is there not among you a single right-minded man?"
They said, "You know well that we have no claim to your daughters, and you know exactly what we want."
He said, "If only I had the strength to withstand you, or some strong support to turn to."
They said, "Lut, we are messengers from your Lord. They will never reach you. Set out with your family in a part of the night, and let none of you look back — except your wife. What strikes them will strike her too. Their appointed time is the morning. Is the morning not near?"
And when our command came, we turned the town upside down and rained upon it stones of baked clay, layer upon layer,
And it is never far from the wrongdoers.
And to Madyan we sent their brother Shu'ayb. He said, 'My people, worship God — you have no god but him. And do not give short measure or short weight. I see you in prosperity, but I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing day.'
And my people, give full measure and full weight in fairness, do not shortchange people of what is theirs, and do not roam the earth spreading corruption.
What God leaves with you is better for you, if you are believers. And I am not a keeper over you.
They said, "Shuʿayb, does your prayer command you that we abandon what our fathers worshipped, or that we cease to do as we please with our own wealth? Surely you are the forbearing, the right-minded one!"
He said, "My people, consider this: if I stand on clear evidence from my Lord, and he has provided me with good provision from himself, why would I go behind your backs to do what I forbid you? I want only to set things right, as far as I am able. My success rests with God alone — in him I trust, and to him I turn."
And my people, do not let your breach with me drive you to the same fate that struck the people of Nuh, or the people of Hud, or the people of Salih — and the people of Lut are not far from you.
Seek forgiveness from your Lord, then turn back to him in repentance. Indeed, my Lord is merciful and loving.
They said, "Shuʿayb, we do not grasp much of what you say, and we see you as weak among us. Were it not for your clan, we would have stoned you — you hold no standing over us."
He said, "My people, is my clan more honored in your eyes than God, that you have cast him behind your backs? My Lord encompasses all that you do.
My people, do as you can, and I am doing as I can. You will come to know who will be visited by a punishment that disgraces him, and who is a liar. Keep watch — I too am watching with you.
And when our command came, we delivered Shu'ayb and those who believed with him, by a mercy from us; and the blast seized those who did wrong, and morning found them lying lifeless in their homes,
11:95كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَآ ۗ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّمَدْيَنَ كَمَا بَعِدَتْ ثَمُودُas though they had never thrived there. So away with Madyan, just as Thamud was cast away.
And we sent Musa with our signs and clear authority,
11:97إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ وَمَلَإِي۟هِۦ فَٱتَّبَعُوٓا۟ أَمْرَ فِرْعَوْنَ ۖ وَمَآ أَمْرُ فِرْعَوْنَ بِرَشِيدٍto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they followed Pharaoh's command, and Pharaoh's command was not rightly guided.
He will go ahead of his people on the day of resurrection and lead them down to the fire — a wretched watering-place to be brought to.
A curse pursued them in this life, and another awaits on the day of resurrection. Wretched is the gift they are given.
These are accounts of the towns we recount to you — some still standing, others reaped down.
We did not wrong them; they wronged themselves. The gods they called upon besides God availed them nothing when your Lord's command came — they only added to their ruin.
Such is the seizure of your Lord when he seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. Indeed, his seizure is painful, severe.
In that is a sign for whoever fears the punishment of the hereafter. That is a day for which all people will be gathered, and that is a day to be witnessed.
And we delay it only for a fixed term.
On the day it comes, no soul will speak except by his permission. Among them will be the wretched and the blessed.
As for those who became wretched, they will be in the fire, where their lot is gasping and sobbing,
There they will remain as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills. Indeed, your Lord does whatever he intends.
As for those who are blessed, they will be in the garden, remaining there as long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord wills — a gift without end.
So be in no doubt about what these people worship — they worship nothing but what their fathers worshipped before them, and we will surely pay them their share in full, undiminished.
And we gave Musa the scripture, and disputes arose about it. Were it not for a word that had already gone forth from your Lord, the matter between them would have been settled. They are deeply in doubt about it, unsettled.
And to each of them your Lord will surely pay in full for their deeds. Indeed, he is aware of all they do.
So stand firm on the straight path, as you have been commanded — you and those who have turned back to God with you — and do not transgress. Indeed, he sees all that you do.
And do not lean toward those who do wrong, or the fire will touch you — you have no protectors apart from God, and you will not be helped.
And establish the prayer at the two ends of the day and in the near hours of the night. Good deeds drive away bad ones. That is a reminder for those who remember.
And be patient — God does not let the reward of those who do good go to waste.
If only there had been, among the generations before you, people of lasting wisdom who forbade corruption on the earth — but there were only a few, those we saved from among them. The wrongdoers pursued the luxuries they were given, and they were guilty.
Your Lord would never destroy a town unjustly while its people were setting things right.
Had your Lord willed, he would have made all people one community, but they will not cease to differ —
11:119إِلَّا مَن رَّحِمَ رَبُّكَ ۚ وَلِذَٰلِكَ خَلَقَهُمْ ۗ وَتَمَّتْ كَلِمَةُ رَبِّكَ لَأَمْلَأَنَّ جَهَنَّمَ مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ أَجْمَعِينَexcept those on whom your Lord has mercy — and for this he created them. And the word of your Lord is fulfilled: "I will surely fill jahannam with jinn and humankind together."
And each account we relate to you from the stories of the messengers is what we use to steady your heart. In these has come to you the truth, and an admonition and a reminder for the believers.
And say to those who do not believe, "Act according to your standing; we too are acting.
And wait — we too are waiting.
To God belongs the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and to him every matter returns. So worship him and place your trust in him. Your Lord is not unaware of what you do.
