Surah As-Saffat — 37:145

۞ فَنَبَذْنَـٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ

Fanabaznaahu bil'araaa'i wa huwa saqeem

Potem rzuciliśmy go na pustkowie i był chory.

So we cast him onto the barren shore, and he was sick,

Reflection

Al-ʿarāʾ names open ground with nothing standing on it, bare in the way a stripped body is bare, and the word does its work by contrast with the belly Yunus has just left. He goes from one enclosure straight into total exposure, ill and unable to shelter himself. God then grows a broad-leaved plant over him, so the rescue comes in two moves: the casting out, then the covering.
