Surah Al-'Alaq — العلق

Chapter 96 of the Qur'an · “The Clot” · 19 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 96:1 ٱقْرَأْ بِٱسْمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَ Read! In the name of your Lord who created:
2. 96:2 خَلَقَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ He created manfrom a clinging form.
3. 96:3 ٱقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْأَكْرَمُ Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One
4. 96:4 ٱلَّذِى عَلَّمَ بِٱلْقَلَمِ who taught by [means of] the pen,
5. 96:5 عَلَّمَ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ who taught man what he did not know.
6. 96:6 كَلَّآ إِنَّ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ لَيَطْغَىٰٓ But man exceeds all bounds
7. 96:7 أَن رَّءَاهُ ٱسْتَغْنَىٰٓ when he thinks he is self-sufficient:
8. 96:8 إِنَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ ٱلرُّجْعَىٰٓ [Prophet], all will return to your Lord.
9. 96:9 أَرَءَيْتَ ٱلَّذِى يَنْهَىٰ Have you seen the man who forbids
10. 96:10 عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّىٰٓ [Our] servant to pray?
11. 96:11 أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَانَ عَلَى ٱلْهُدَىٰٓ Have you seen whether he is rightly guided,
12. 96:12 أَوْ أَمَرَ بِٱلتَّقْوَىٰٓ or encourages true piety?
13. 96:13 أَرَءَيْتَ إِن كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰٓ Have you seen whether he denies the truth and turns away from it?
14. 96:14 أَلَمْ يَعْلَم بِأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَرَىٰ Does he not realize that God sees all?
15. 96:15 كَلَّا لَئِن لَّمْ يَنتَهِ لَنَسْفَعًۢا بِٱلنَّاصِيَةِ No! If he does not stop, We shall drag him by his forehead––
16. 96:16 نَاصِيَةٍ كَـٰذِبَةٍ خَاطِئَةٍ his lying, sinful forehead.
17. 96:17 فَلْيَدْعُ نَادِيَهُۥ Let him summon his comrades;
18. 96:18 سَنَدْعُ ٱلزَّبَانِيَةَ We shall summon the guards of Hell.
19. 96:19 كَلَّا لَا تُطِعْهُ وَٱسْجُدْ وَٱقْتَرِب ۩ No! Do not obey him [Prophet]: bow down in worship and draw close.
