Surah Ash-Sharh — 94:5

فَإِنَّ مَعَ ٱلْعُسْرِ يُسْرًا

Fa inna ma'al usri yusra

So truly where there is hardship there is also ease;

So, truly, with hardship comes ease.

Reflection

The preposition here is maʿa, alongside, rather than baʿda, after: ease is placed with the hardship instead of waiting on the far side of it. Classical commentators also noticed that the hardship carries the definite article while the ease does not, and read the repetition in the following verse as one hardship against two eases. It arrives after a question listing four things God had already done for the Prophet, so the promise rests on what had already happened.
