Surah Al-Layl — الليل

Chapter 92 of the Qur'an · “The Night” · 21 verses · revealed in Makkah

1. 92:1 وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰ By the enshrouding night,
2. 92:2 وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّىٰ by the radiant day,
3. 92:3 وَمَا خَلَقَ ٱلذَّكَرَ وَٱلْأُنثَىٰٓ by His creation of male and female!
4. 92:4 إِنَّ سَعْيَكُمْ لَشَتَّىٰ The ways you take differ greatly.
5. 92:5 فَأَمَّا مَنْ أَعْطَىٰ وَٱتَّقَىٰ There is the one who gives, who is mindful of God,
6. 92:6 وَصَدَّقَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ who testifies to goodness––
7. 92:7 فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْيُسْرَىٰ We shall smooth his way towards ease.
8. 92:8 وَأَمَّا مَنۢ بَخِلَ وَٱسْتَغْنَىٰ There is the one who is miserly, who is self-satisfied,
9. 92:9 وَكَذَّبَ بِٱلْحُسْنَىٰ who denies goodness––
10. 92:10 فَسَنُيَسِّرُهُۥ لِلْعُسْرَىٰ We shall smooth his way towards hardship
11. 92:11 وَمَا يُغْنِى عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥٓ إِذَا تَرَدَّىٰٓ and his wealth will not help him as he falls.
12. 92:12 إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا لَلْهُدَىٰ Our part is to provide guidance––
13. 92:13 وَإِنَّ لَنَا لَلْـَٔاخِرَةَ وَٱلْأُولَىٰ this world and the next belong to Us––
14. 92:14 فَأَنذَرْتُكُمْ نَارًا تَلَظَّىٰ so I warn you about the raging Fire,
15. 92:15 لَا يَصْلَىٰهَآ إِلَّا ٱلْأَشْقَى in which none but the most wicked one will burn,
16. 92:16 ٱلَّذِى كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّىٰ who denied [the truth], and turned away.
17. 92:17 وَسَيُجَنَّبُهَا ٱلْأَتْقَى The most pious one will be spared this––
18. 92:18 ٱلَّذِى يُؤْتِى مَالَهُۥ يَتَزَكَّىٰ who gives his wealth away as self-purification,
19. 92:19 وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍ تُجْزَىٰٓ not to return a favour to anyone
20. 92:20 إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ but for the sake of his Lord the Most High––
21. 92:21 وَلَسَوْفَ يَرْضَىٰ and he will be well pleased.
