Chapter 91 of the Qur'an · “The Sun” · 15 verses · revealed in Makkah
91:1 وَٱلشَّمْسِ وَضُحَىٰهَاBy the sun in its morning brightness
91:2وَٱلْقَمَرِ إِذَا تَلَىٰهَاand by the moon as it follows it,
91:3وَٱلنَّهَارِ إِذَا جَلَّىٰهَاby the day as it displays the sun’s glory
91:4وَٱلَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَىٰهَاand by the night as it conceals it,
91:5وَٱلسَّمَآءِ وَمَا بَنَىٰهَاby the sky and how He built it
91:6وَٱلْأَرْضِ وَمَا طَحَىٰهَاand by the earth and how He spread it,
91:7وَنَفْسٍ وَمَا سَوَّىٰهَاby the soul and how He formed it
91:8فَأَلْهَمَهَا فُجُورَهَا وَتَقْوَىٰهَاand inspired it [to know] its own rebellion and piety!
91:9قَدْ أَفْلَحَ مَن زَكَّىٰهَاThe one who purifies his soul succeeds
91:10وَقَدْ خَابَ مَن دَسَّىٰهَاand the one who corrupts it fails.
91:11كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ بِطَغْوَىٰهَآIn their arrogant cruelty, the people of Thamud called [their messenger] a liar,
91:12إِذِ ٱنۢبَعَثَ أَشْقَىٰهَاwhen the most wicked man among them rose [against him].
91:13فَقَالَ لَهُمْ رَسُولُ ٱللَّهِ نَاقَةَ ٱللَّهِ وَسُقْيَـٰهَاThe messenger of God said to them, ‘[Leave] God’s camel to drink,’
91:14فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَعَقَرُوهَا فَدَمْدَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَبُّهُم بِذَنۢبِهِمْ فَسَوَّىٰهَاbut they called him a liar and hamstrung her. Their Lord destroyed them for their crime and levelled them.
91:15وَلَا يَخَافُ عُقْبَـٰهَاHe did not hesitate to punish them.
