يَقُولُ ٱلْإِنسَـٰنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ ٱلْمَفَرُّ
Yaqoolul insaanu yaw ma 'izin aynal mafarr
on that Day man will say, ‘Where can I escape?’
On that day the human will say, "Where is the escape?"
The one asking is the same insān who at verses 5 and 6 wanted the road ahead left open for his wrongdoing and asked, mocking, ayyāna, when this day would come. His question has shrunk from ayyāna to ayna, from when to where, and what he wants now is what he wanted then, an open road in front of him. Mafarr can name the place of escape or the act of fleeing, and either sense leaves him asking for what the next line refuses.
