Surah Qaf — 50:16

We created man––We know what his soul whispers to him: We are closer to him than his jugular vein––

Indeed, we created the human being, and we know what his lower self whispers to him — and we are closer to him than his jugular vein.

Reflection

Nearness is stated here as knowledge, and what is known is the whisper nobody else can hear. Commentators divided over whose nearness it is, some reading it of God without qualification, others of the two recorders the next verse seats on either side. The passage lets both stand by placing them one after the other, and on either reading the inner voice ends up inside the record.
