اللَّهُ الصَّمَدُ
Allahu samad
Allah tempat meminta segala sesuatu.
God, the Eternal Refuge to whom all turn.
Ṣamad is the most argued word in the surah and possibly in the short chapters generally. The oldest readings run in two directions: solid throughout with no hollow in it, and the one to whom all turn in need and beyond whom there is no further recourse. Neither has displaced the other, and the word is used only here in the whole Qur'an, so nothing else in the text settles it.
